How to add my editor to right-click menu

I use UltraEdit for editing text files and I would like to add that choice to the right-click menu when I right-click on a file. Installing UltraEdit is supposed to add that but my fairly old version did not do that when I installed it on Win8.1. Can someone point me in the right direction?

Right-click a text file and click Open With. Assuming UltraEdit doesn’t appear in the list (it didn’t for me, either), click “Choose default program”. If you still don’t see UltraEdit, click “More options”. It probably won’t be in the expanded list, either, so scroll all the way to the bottom and click “Look for another app on this PC”. Then you’ll get the standard Open dialog, where you can navigate to the folder (in my case, C:Program Files (x86)IDM Computer SolutionsUltraEdit-32) and click on the executable file uedit32.exe, then click the Open button.

That makes UltraEdit the default program for .txt files — they’ll display the UltraEdit icon, and double-clicking the text file will open it in UltraEdit. The program will also appear in the Open With list on the right-click menu, but only for .txt files and not for other types.

There’s also a File Associations category in the Advanced > Configuration dialog inside UltraEdit, but I haven’t been able to make it do anything on Win8.1.

I have done that for a couple of file types but .bat files have me stumped. Right now I am mostly editing .bat files so I first tried creating an association between .bat files and UltraEdit but then the .bat files would not execute! After removing that association, if I right-click on a .bat file the context menu does not contain the Open With item! When I installed UltraEdit it was supposed to add itself to the right-click menu and it did that on my Vista PC but what it did on the Win8.1 laptop did not cause UltraEdit to appear in the context menu. My version of UltraEdit predates Win8 so I guess it didn’t do the right thing in the registry for Win8. I did a search in regedit and UltraEdit is recorded there and the entries look OK to my uninformed eyes. I am hoping to learn a way to manually add it to the context menu.

Paul, I kind of overlooked your suggestion because I was busy with something else and then I forgot to go back and try that. I just looked at the Send To folder on the Win8.1 machine and I’m not sure what kind of thing to add to it! I can’t tell if the current entries are shortcuts or something else! Can you shed any light on that?

Have a look at this HTG tutorial just change the path from notepad.exe to the full path of UltraEdit.

Thanks for the suggestion. At first I thought that was the solution to my problem but then I realized that the procedure you suggested is to add the editor to the Open With menu and that menu is not visble when some file types, like .bat files, are involved. I’ve installed the xplorer2 (lite) file manager and my UltraEdit does show up in its right-click menu! So I’m all set as long as I use that file manager.

Place a shortcut to the application in the “Send To” folder and the application is then available via the “Send To” menu.
