Does anyone know to change Outlook’s default template?
The default template is at C:Program Files (x86)Microsoft OfficeTemplates1033MAIL.oft. I know this because the “Choose Form” dialog says that the template’s name is “mail,” the extension for an Outlook template is .oft, and that is the only file named mail.oft (regardless of case) on my disk.
But when I replace this file with a modified version, then quit and restart Outlook… it continues to work as if the original template were in place.
Does Outlook continue to run in the background after I close it, like Firefox does, so that it might keep the template in a cache? Not according to Task Manager. When I close Outlook I see OUTLOOK.exe disappear from Task Manager’s process pane, and when I restart it I see OUTLOOK.exe appear again.
I put additional templates in the same directory as the default template, and they don’t even show up in the “Choose Form” dialog. It’s as if the …1033 directory were a decoy, and Outlook had its own copy of the template directory that’s not in the file system at all.
