When you put mous on an icon of Word file, you usuallz get information
    Author, fx JOHN SMITH
    Type od document
    Last saved etc.

And when you inspect the Word document fx Word 2003 or similar, you can get location of the file and again Author and laste saved by etc…

In itseelf, those datas are not supposed to be secret, but… is it possible to erase or/and hide them, when the file is transfered on fx CD or USB-‘flash??

I jus t got a good reason for it.
Namely, what if I take part in various literarz competition, and besides the printed text I must send also a version on CD?
Although the tekst is send under “password”, and the name and the address are in the separate convolute, someone still can see the name if they rightclikc on the file in CD — they can see Author and last saved by and Location etc, and naive as I were I put my own name on my own PC…

So, the question is::: is it possible (and if it is, how) to erase those reavaling data from Word 2003 file, so that noone can see noone’s name when rightclicking on the file?

    Thanks.

You can download this tool from Microsoft to sanitize Word 2003 document.

      Thanks.
I had downloaded the tool, and it is now installed.
But… I don´´t know how to apply it.

Wehn I click on the tool it only keep being installed over and over, and I don´´t know what to click on Wordf file in order to erase hidden data etc…

      Any advice?

The download page has instructions to use the tool:

      Instructions for use:

After you install the Remove Hidden Data add-in, open the document you want to review then, on the File menu, click Remove Hidden Data.

Note: If you do not see the Remove Hidden Data command on the File menu, check the following:
On the Tools menu, point to Options, and then click the Security tab.
Under Macro Security, click Macro Security.
      Click the Trusted Publishers tab.
Select the Trust all installed add-ins and templates check box, and then click OK twice.
Alternatively, after you’ve installed the Remove Hidden Data add-in, you can run it from a command line prompt. For complete instructions see the Offrhdreadme.htm file, located in the add-in installation folder.

Sorry, but it did not solve the problem, but it only created a new one.

When I disabled “Trust all publishers and add-ins” etc, I still could see location of the file with my name on it, and additional problem
occures – each time I open Word file, I get pop-on warning about macros….

So I had to return to Tools and enable TRus all ads in in order to get rid of this annoyance.

Maybe it is not possible after all to rease data about Word file, so the only solution is to go some public PC in some IT cafe with usb memory, and then create a new file on some onthers people’s computer…

And… what was the purpose of downloading that Microsoft tool, if it was sufficient only to get to the Tools on the opened word file?
Anywas, it did not work either way.

        Vlado,

I believe that once you have removed the metadata, if you open the document again Word will reinsert the metadata.

To test this, try running the tool on a file and then opening it on a completely different pc.

      Hi,

I never used that, just went to the link that had been posted and read the instructions. As far as I can tell from reading the instructions, the way to remove the data you want to remove, is to click Remove Hidden Data, on the File menu. The trust all publishers instructions are meant just to allow you to view the Remove Hidden Data option in the file menu.
