• How to clean install from upgrades

I’m presently running Win98SE. I’m the type that loads and unloads every oddball piece of freeware/shareware utility that comes along. I’m sure the machine is littered with the detritus of a thousand forgotten programs. Anyhow, seems like a clean install and starting over would be a good idea.

Many years ago I had Win3.1. Then I upgraded to WFWG. Then an upgrade to Win95, then Win 98, then SE. I think I still have all the CDs but not the original Win3.1 disks. All the upgrades require proof that Windows was already installed. How the heck can I do a clean install?

This is a step by step instructions. Also this the THE BEST site for OS and hardware help. A nice bunch of people. Be going there for around 3 years.

        Dave,

Just a big thank you for the lead to the pcnineoneone.com forum, which looks like a really good one for hardward/OS problems.
I just got help there with a Win2K problem, which got me pointed in a direction I needed to go to find a solution – good stuff.

        Regards,
        Gary

Cpemma, you are correct, but you must tell Windows setup where to look by selecting the cd drive.

      Hi Paul,

Before you can reinstall the W98SE Update to W98, you’ll probably have to install W98. For some reason it won’t even look at your system unless W98 is installed. I’ve seen somewhere that this is because the W98SE update doesn’t have all the W98 files, just the updated ones. So, install W98, showing it your W95 CD, then do the W98SE Update.

Of course, if you’ve got a W98SE Upgrade (not sure if there is such an animal), not the Update, you should be able to ignore the above. In that case, install W98SE, showing it your W95 or W98 CD.

      Cheers
