Windows 7 pro. 2 x internal hard drives , C: main, E: for backups. Main drive C: ‘fried’ so got new one and reinstalled Windows 7 pro and verified it with Microsoft via phone digital inputs. Searched the internet for instructions BUT found that it can ONLY be restored to the place where it was backed up from, and that place has fried.

I am gobsmacked, why have I backed up for these years in case of a drive ‘fry’ IF the backup cannot be re-written onto a new hard drive. The forums I have looked at just repeat Backup/Restore as per above, and start by backing up the C: drive. Laughable if it didn’t contain 20 years of documents and photos.

    Cheers from Australia

What backup software are you using?
Can you mount the ISO of your latest full drive image backup and copy the data to the new drive?
You should make a full drive image of the reinstalled Win7 immediately to an external HDD to protect the re-installation you were able to make.

      Main drive C: ‘fried’

While your “fried” issue may be total drive destruction, it might just be the boot partition. Suggest putting the “fried” C drive in an external container and then try viewing it as a USB connected drive.  Your personal files may be accessible. If not try running chkdsk /f from a CMD window on it.

If that doesn’t work, try the built in  “Disk Management”  utility.  It is under Windows Administrative Tools, as “Computer Management”.
