How to export all Microsoft Office 2007 custom settings

I am currently using Microsoft Windows XP SP3 (32-bit) and I have finally decided to switch to Windows 7 (64-bit). I will probably install Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit.

After I get Windows 7 installed, I will also have to re-install Microsoft Office 2007 (Outlook, Excel, Word, PowerPoint). As I have been using Office 2007 for several years on my XP machine, I have done some customizations to the programs. (Ribbons, Quick Access Toolbar icons, signature file for Outlook, fonts, and who remembers what else…)

How do I transfer all these customizations from one OS to the other? Would Windows Easy Transfer automatically do that for me?

I think Windows Easy Transfer will take care, among other things, of exporting/importing things that pertain to Outlook (such as e-mails, contacts), but I am not so sure about customizations that I have made through the years to Office programs.

If it’s the same as 2010, go into each program, for example Word, and select the qat dropdown, More Commands (where you set up the customizations) and at the bottom right there’s an import/export button. Proceed from there.

Well, rats! It looks like Office 2007 does not have an import/export button…
I am actually hoping that somebody knows of some utility that does what I want to do. Something like Windows Easy Transfer but for Office 2007 customizations.

You can download the Office 2003 Resource Kit (see the link below) as this has the save my settings profile wizard and is said to still work with office 2007.

Wow, huge changes between the two…Here’s the official explanation of where they are for 2007 http://support.microsoft.com/kb/926805 .
I looked after this for my office, so I created a batch file to copy the standard toolbar for each user. Microsoft sure screwed things up by removing some of these items from the “Standard” locations. Haven’t worked with any of the profile wizards, so I can’t comment on those. Just make sure you have a backup of the qat’s somewhere.

I believe Windows Easy Transfer will pick up all your customizations except for your account settings in Outlook.

From my experience, learned the hard way when my work PC gets upgraded and I discover that the company back-ups ignore personal Office settings, here are my tips, not necessarily complete:
– copy all the .QAT files you can find to somewhere safe
– on the new machine, set up a customised toolbar and find out where Office put the new QAT file
– then paste your personal QATs over the top of the “new” ones – behold! you’e back in business
– also you need to do the same trick with personalised start-up files (global template in Word: normal.doc?, personal workbook in Excel: personal.xls?, etc). Note that there is an xlsb or xlsm version of personal in Excel (maybe in word – I’m not a heavy user) – for no good reason other than finding it first I use the xlsm route – that’s not a recommendation just an alert.
– and if you use other templates in Word (.dot?) or tailored workbooks in Excel (.xlt?) or the pre-styled workbook and sheet options Book.xls? and Sheet.xls? you need to find and copy them from Startup or I’m afraid one of the other possible locations.
