I accidentally hit some key or combination of keys in FF and a filelist of an open laptop directory appeared on the screen.
The URL looked something like this: file:///C:/Users/username/Desktop/updated files/X Folder/X 2021. On the screen there appeared in alpha order a list of all the files and folders (working as links) in the ../X 2021 directory (aka folder). It looks like a function I could use, if I only know how to do it again (without typing /// and the Explorer address in the URL field everytime).

I’ve searched the FF keyboard shortcuts to see if I could find what key or key combination produced this screen, but I have no clue as to what this shortkey function might be called – I know it as FileList, but I don’t see anything like that in the FF Keyboard shortcuts.

Does anyone know what the shortcut is called and what the shortkey is??

As a regular Firefox user, I can’t say I’ve ever come across something like that, either intentionally or accidentally.

My best guess is a combination of common and Firefox commands/shortcuts. For example, having copied the “address” of a folder on your computer, whether intentionally or not, and then pasted that into Firefox’s address bar:

      • In File Explorer, with the current folder address highlighted in the address bar: Ctrl+C (or right-click > Copy).
      • In Firefox, select the address bar: F6 / Alt+D / Ctrl+L (I use that last one a lot).
      • Paste and Go: Ctrl+V (or right-click > Paste) followed by Enter, or just right-click > Paste and Go.

Or maybe even a single drag and drop mouse action. Dragging a folder onto the Firefox window (anywhere) will cause Firefox to list the content of that folder. This works from the desktop, file list within File Explorer, and even from the default mode of the File Explorer address bar, where each folder in the current path is treated like a navigation button.

If you like using your browser to navigate local files (others can do it, too – it’s not unique to Firefox), you could use one of these methods to open a commonly-used folder, and then bookmark it.

You can open directories (and other files) in Firefox by dragging them from File Explorer into a Firefox window. Maybe this is what happened to you?

I don’t know of a direct shortcut key to recreate this, but you can create a quick link to a directory both via a Firefox Bookmark (which you can then open via a Keyword shortcut) and via a Windows .url shortcut (although you have to set .url files to open in Firefox specifically for the latter to work).
