In a new reply I tried to insert links to a couple of my own posts.

But it failed. I only got links to the corresponding topics.

How do I go about getting a specific link to a particular post?

    TIA,

type the post number in the entry box (example #1876429).
Go to the post you want to link.
Right click on the post # in the upper right.
Come back to the entry box
Highlight the number you put there #1876429
Click on the “chain” in the menubar (insert/edit link)

Paste the url into the top box
Check the box that says “open link in new tab”
      Click “Add link”

        Got it.

        Thank you.

(Complicated though. Valid URLs converted to links automatically is a lot easier.)

Well you could just copy the URL linked from the post number field, then use the link button and paste that, and write a suitable text or it seems to default to displaying the URL directly too.

            Yes.
Though that method is quite familiar to me, I seem to have temporarily forgotten it.

When multiline/-paragraph, I always compose in EditPad Lite and, when satisfied, I copy and paste into LibreOffice Writer, Firefox|Chrome, Thunderbird, whatever the target’s text box. Only then do I choose/modify font and layout, if needed.

Unfortunately my memory lapses will increase with advancing age, therefore my anticipated apologies.

In the upper right of every topic/post, you will see a link to that post. For example, #1234567. Right click on that link, and copy the link location. Paste that link into a new post, and you will then have a link to the specific post rather than to the entire topic.

If you do that it becomes a link to the thread instead of the post (as hinted at in the first post of this thread), and if you paste it AS a link but without link text it disappears completely. (Try it.)

As you suggest, trying first Mr. Jim Phelps method; as I have used it frequently in the past and it makes sense to me. Here is link to his individual posted comment, in full:

If all works as in the past, the WordPress widgets will recognize those text strings for what they are and encode them appropriately, highlighting and underlining to present as an obvious hyperlink.

I will pass on your suggestion, as it seems obvious that failing to insert link text results in a null field of zero width. It did not disappear, but it is really hard to hover or click on so narrow a link.

Self reply, glad I tried it. Interesting result. Thank you for pointing it out.

This is definitely a change in forum behavior. I have used the method described by Mr. Jim Phelps many times in the past when my intent is to display the full path/address for the purpose of assuring a reader that the address is legitimate when compared with what they observe by hovering.

Everyone does hover and inspect before clicking on an unfamiliar link, right?

This is a regression in the WordPress package being used now, compared to earlier behavior.
