Hi, I’m back with more frustration from Windows 7 .
I have two different models of media players, the O!Play from Asus and the Seagate HD media player. Both can surf a shared XP drive or LINUX NAS RAID with no problem.
When I try to access a W7 shared drive both media players go to a log in screen to enter the network user and password, even though password requirement is turned off in W7 and the shared drive is set for Everyone with Full access (Security settings the same). I also turned off Windows firewall temporarily in case that was blocking something.
I’ve tried entering the user name and password as well as just leaving them blank and in all cases the log in fails. I checked the network protocols to see if there was any sort of legacy protocol I could add but there’s only something called reliable multicast protocol listed.
What I CAN do is fire up Media Center and add the shared media to that library and activate the media streaming option in Advanced sharing settings in networking. Then the media players can access the media via the Media server option rather than the Network option. However, this extra layer consumes more resources, media discovery seems to be slower than direct network access and sometimes incomplete and worst of all, playback stutters strongly even with standard def on a 10/100 adapter. Haven’t had the opportunity to try a 10/100/1000 adapter yet.
So are there any settings or protocols I can add or set to get direct network access to shared folders on Win 7 systems from the lowly media players?
I will try changing the advanced settings to require a password but other than that and a gigabit adapter for the less desirable media server option, I’m out of ideas.
