How can I get Windows Update to to behave in a “reasonable” manner? I want WU to download the patches, install all of them, and then ask for a reboot. Last night, after I had seen on Friday that the DEFCON level was reduced to 4, I un-paused WU. WU told me that there were three updates:
1) MRT for June (KB890830)
2) .NET preview (KB5003537) [Why was this not optional? The Win 10 preview was.)]
3) 2021-06 Cum for Win 10 21H1 (KB5003637)
WU downloaded 1) and installed it. The WU window did not tell me that it had started the installation, but I saw MRT.exe running. Then it finished downloading the .NET patch and installed it. It was still downloading the 21H1 patch when the .NET patch installation finished, and WU wanted a reboot. I waited until the 21H1 patch was downloaded 100% to see if it would install. A WU log I process told me that this patch installation was cancelled. (This line is no longer in the log, and I no longer have the exact wording.) So I rebooted. After reboot, WU decided that it had to re-download the 21H1 patch. It did, installed it, and rebooted. This patch took a long time to install (maybe over 20 minutes); when I installed the 21H1 update, the update took less than two minutes to install.
When WU is downloading a patch, the download is very slow; I checked my settings, and I have not told WU to slow down downloads.
