How can I get Windows Update to to behave in a “reasonable” manner? I want WU to download the patches, install all of them, and then ask for a reboot. Last night, after I had seen on Friday that the DEFCON level was reduced to 4, I un-paused WU. WU told me that there were three updates:
    1) MRT for June  (KB890830)
    2) .NET preview   (KB5003537)  [Why was this not optional?  The Win 10 preview was.)]
    3) 2021-06 Cum for Win 10 21H1  (KB5003637)

WU downloaded 1) and installed it. The WU window did not tell me that it had started the installation, but I saw MRT.exe running. Then it finished downloading the .NET patch and installed it. It was still downloading the 21H1 patch when the .NET patch installation finished, and WU wanted a reboot. I waited until the 21H1 patch was downloaded 100% to see if it would install.  A WU log I process told me that this patch installation was cancelled. (This line is no longer in the log, and I no longer have the exact wording.)   So I rebooted.  After reboot, WU decided that it had to re-download the 21H1 patch. It did, installed it, and rebooted.  This patch took a long time to install (maybe over 20 minutes); when I installed the 21H1 update, the update took less than two minutes to install.

When WU is downloading a patch, the download is very slow; I checked my settings, and I have not told WU to slow down downloads.

Upgrade your Windows 10 to Pro.
20H2 and 21H1 are small ‘switches on’ updates that take minutes to download/update.

I use WUmgr to install updates.

I just saw this oldish reply to my posting.  I am already running  Win 10 Pro.

Dont use WU block it with WUB use WUMT or Wumgr for updates where you can download, install or hide. Sledgehammer integrates blocking with both the above. Haven’t used WU for years on 10

WuMgr is an adjunct to WU, not a replacement – WuMgr uses WU to do the work.

        cheers, Paul
