As per Susan, I put off installing Windows 11 21H2. It was available in Windows Update. I made sure that GRC InControl had released control and then I ran the Windows 11 22H2 update on Oct 16. It began the install and then rolled back with:

“Installation Failure: Windows failed to install the following update with error 0xC1900101: Windows 11, version 22H2.”

Since then Windows update, GRC Incontrol, wumgr, all show “You’re up to date”. I’ve tried all the things I can find except dism which Susan says isn’t great, to no avail. Am I missing something simple?

I just now noticed that wumgr shows that it installed in March:

    “Windows 11, version 22H2; ; MoUpdateOrchestrator; 3/14/2023; ; Succeeded (0x00000000)”

    Settings|System|About still shows:

    “Edition Windows 11 Home
    Version 21H2
    Installed on ‎2/‎11/‎2022
    OS build 22000.2538
Experience Windows Feature Experience Pack 1000.22001.1000.0”

So, how do I get Windows Update to resend the invitation to update to 22H2? Just wait?

As for the failure, I plan to try removing all usb hardware before trying again. And I guess uninstalling Norton?

    Thanks, Allen

Restart, wait for a day for Windows to settle, restart and then see what WuMgr offers.
If it still won’t update, install over the top.
Got a misbehaving Windows 10? reinstall

      cheers, Paul

        The Windows troubleshooters shows:

“Problem with BITS service : The requested service has already been started. System.Management.Automation.RemoteException More help is available by typing NET HELPMSG 2182. System.Management.Automation.RemoteException”

Researching this leads to really not much good news. (Message 2182 is just “requested service has already been started”.)

It seems the reinstall is the only hope, but I’ve never done one and it’s frankly daunting for me.

A few days ago I impulsively joined the Windows Insider program, and it did then offer 23H2. Though then I backed out of that since Susan is not keen on it, but maybe it’s worth a try?

Thanks for any of your thoughts,

        Allen

Joining the insiders program won’t fix problems with your PC – it may cause some…

Make an image backup of your machine to an external disk.
Create a backup boot USB and test.
Download a W11 ISO and mount it.
Run setup.exe and tell Windows to keep everything.

If it goes pear shaped you can restore from backup – simples!  🙂

      cheers, Paul

I am still tempted to try to repair the BITS/WU problem before doing a reinstall.
Anyone have any comment on a. or b.? Looks worth a try before a reinstall:
