In earlier versions it was an easy matter to find the “line number” style and reformat to suit. Word 2007 has me completely buffalo’ed. I can’t even FIND the style, much less change it.

    Any ideas?

Go to the styles section of the Home ribbon.

On the bottom of the ribbon where it says “Styles”, click on the small square icon at the right hand end (see image below), alternatively use the keyboard shortcut Alt+Ctrl+Shift+S
This will open up the list of styles, click on the “Options” link on the bottom of that dialog and choose the option to show “All Styles” in the top drop down box. You can right-click on the “Line Number” style to modify it.

The line number style is there in my W2007. It may be easier to find if, under options (in the styles pane), you change the sort order of the styles pane to alphaetical.
