“Did you lose your phone or leave your account logged in at a public computer? You
can log out everywhere else, and stay logged in here.”

If you have remained logged in on another machine, you are able to log out
remotely using the Dashboard on AskWoody.

    While you are logged in,

    1. Go to https://www.askwoody.com/wp-admin/
    2. Click on Profile and scroll down to Account Management.
    3. Under Sessions, it will tell you if you have another log-in active, and allow you to logout everywhere else, while you stay logged in on your current device.
    4. To return to the AskWoody page, click on the AskWoody link on the top menu row.

You can also use the Dashboard, as above, to generate a new password for your account.

To update your password using the strong generated password:
      Follow steps 1& 2 above

Click Generate Password, copy the new password given, click Update Profile at the bottom of the page, then log in with your new password.

You can also make your own password:
Click Generate Password, enter your own strong password (if it doesn’t tell you your password is strong, keep adding to it!), copy your new password to log in with, then click Update Profile.

Kirsty, I have noticed, repeatedly, that if I do not log out when leaving this site, later I find myself logged out anyway, as long as several hours have gone by. I can’t tell how many hours have to go by for that to happen, but if I leave in the morning and come back late that night I’ll probably find I have been logged out in the meantime. Does this make a remote logout when one forgets to do it and then is unable to come back here again soon after,  unnecessary?

I don’t have a specific answer to your question–but, it sounds like the answer in your particular case may very well be *Yes*, but probably only if you log in with a single device–which is not the actual topic here. Kirsty is discussing logging out from *other devices* other than your current primary device:

“Did you lose your phone or leave your account logged in at a public computer? You can log out everywhere else, and stay logged in here.”

But, I have a question: Getting logged out after a few hours does not sound like something that is the norm. I remain logged in for days, and perhaps even weeks as long as I check the box at the time of logging in to *Remember Me*–I forget the exact wording, but it’s just under the password area.

So the question is: is the browser you’re using have some sort of time out that is in some way deleting your browser cookies? Or do you run some other program that *cleans up* your internet browsing in some way that alters your cookies? It’s an AskWoody cookie that keeps your logged on status and is supposed to *Remember* you when you again open your browser and come back to the site here.

But, it sounds like that’s not happening in your case.

NightOwl: I have never checked the “Remember me” box under the password field, so it is unchecked.

I have antimalware software that removes cookies picked up while browsing (but only some, not all). That could be one reason for my being logged out, as I use this feature of the antimalware software after I finish my morning Internet session (email, news, weather, Woody’s, etc.) and then have it scan for malware. I do this again at night, before calling it a day.

If the above were the reasons why I get logged out automatically, from the single device (my PC) that I use to browse the Web after a long enough time of being disconnected from it, then my experience could be irrelevant to the discussion in this thread.
