Ted is correct when he says that no one has to buy Windows 8, the rest of his statement however does not follow.

Sorry, but I see nothing in this article that’s compelling enough to make me want to switch to Apple products. Its all fluff and extra features that are nice but aren’t very significant. By the same token, I see little of significance that MS offering that is going to make an Apple user jump ship.

I’m not planning to go to Apple, I will stay with Windows 7 until 2020, and then go to Linux, but my wife sent me this link on Sunday.
http://www.foxnews.com/tech/2012/07/29/10-reasons-to-drop-windows-for-mountain-lion/?intcmp=features
She has an iPad, and she likes it. When she gets a new laptop, which will probably be at Christmas, I could see her getting a MacBook, instead of going to a Surface or other Windows 8 tablet or laptop.
I think a lot of current Windows users will get an Apple when they get their next computer, but I don’t see anybody going the other way.

AskWoody LoungerJuly 29, 2012 at 6:54 pm #1343075If you don’t want a computer with Windows 8 on it in the future, just purchase a genuine Windows 7 disk and clean install it.
Nobody says one has to go with the way OEM computer manufacturers set up their PCs. You do have a choice in the matter. It’s not a big stretch to factor in the cost of a genuine copy of whatever OS you choose to run on any PC manufactured these days.

AskWoody LoungerJuly 29, 2012 at 8:06 pm #1343080Come on, How to skip Win 8 is to keep using Win 7, Vista or Win XP. That’s rather obvious, and consequently a no brainer, or nonsense statement. In other words, no one is forced to move on, they can keep using their present OS. Hence the whole premise of the articles is nonsensical.
The second article is also a no brainer. I, and many others, would never consider switching to the overpriced hardware to run the fruit OS. It appears that over 95% of the worlds computing population agrees with me.

AskWoody LoungerJuly 30, 2012 at 10:30 am #1343123I almost think the few Apple users out there are more fanatical than Windows users. I would put both Apple users and avid Linux users in this same category. I suppose there is nothing wrong with being fanatical in favor of your OS, but I know of many Windows users that also dabble in iOS and some flavor of Linux. I myself, although a confirmed Windows user (Win 7 and Win 8 RP now) have used Linux for a while. It just was too geeky for me. Using the terminal for everything was just too much.

My main experience is on Windows, but I do not discount Linux: it’s simply another tool in the box to get a job done.
Does that make me a geek? Probably.
Consider this though: Quite possibly, many of the regular posters here may be similarly labeled by Joe Public. I mean, come on folks, look at the big picture – we spend hours and hours downloading, installing, tweaking and arguing over a non-production released computer operating system.
/edit
with a bit of luck we will have the RTM in the next few days on Technet and other official Microsoft channels. That’s when the real fun begins!

AskWoody LoungerJuly 30, 2012 at 12:32 pm #1343132The Ipad and Iphone are introducing a lot more people to Apple OSes. In fact, Apple now has a net worth more than Microsoft and Google combined. They aren’t all fanatics but find Apple products easier to use than Windows. I still consider myself a mainly Windows user but I find I really liked the IPad I picked up for my wife. Wasn’t all that expensive either. Got a refurbed Ipad WiFi for $319 from the Apple store. Comes with a new battery and the same guarantee as the new Ipads. The Windows Ipads will have a long way to go to compete with the Ipad and its vast array of Apps.

MemberAugust 14, 2012 at 3:03 pm #1345194I will NOT migrate to Win 8 until I have to, or M$ provides a way to have it boot to the normal Explorer shell. My box is a floor tower hooked to a fine Dell 27″ non-touch monitor, and is loaded with complex, optimized hardware. If it weren’t that 8 changes the boot paradigm, I’d try blanking an old XP partition and try out 8, to see if everything worked as in 7, but I don’t want 8’s SETUP to mess with the existing /BOOT partition and my BCD database to risk messing up current multiboot functionality. It’s too risky to monkey around with something that works.

Virtual Windows 8
Previously, I was unable to install or run Windows 8 as a virtual machine. You absolutely cannot do it in Windows Virtual PC, I think Microsoft has done things to make it impossible, although I don’t know why. I tried it today to make sure, and you still can’t do it.
When I tried VMware Player, they had an “Update” that uninstalled the version that I had installed and installed a whole new version. That seemed promising, but no.
Then I tried Virtual Box again. Virtual Box also had a new version, and the new version has Windows 8 as an option in a drop down list. You still have to navigate to the ISO, but it went right in. An operating system in Virtual Box cannot mess up the settings on your hardware PC.
Or you could do what I did, and get an old PC for $100 to $200 on Craig’s list, and install it on that.

It’s a matter of taste, preference, choice, style, etc. It’s not my fault if YOU have no taste or style, make bad choices, and have invalid preferences. 😆

AskWoody LoungerAugust 14, 2012 at 1:31 pm #1345186Here is another interesting article on TechRepublic:
A good answer in this article:
people will have a few choices:
-
[*]Purchase a Windows 8 machine and stick with Metro.
[*]Purchase a Windows 8 machine and pay for the downgrade to Windows 7.
[*]Purchase a PC (regardless of OS) and install a flavor of Linux.
[*]Purchase a Linux PC from the likes of System 76 or Dell.
[*]Purchase a Mac.Obviously each choice has its pros and cons.
