Sometime in the past week http://www.outlook.live.com started “paragraphing” my inbox list of emails. It puts a group header above common items as in:

    Cars

    car email 1

    car email 2

    Boats

    boat email 1

    boat email 2

The problem with this is, first, it creates a huge email list as in this case a list 6 lines long instead of a list of just the actual emails – 4 lines.  Multiply that over lots of emails and you see the problem.

Second, some of the items in the “paragraph” end up being old emails I am just saving but don’t want to look at every time I log in. Normally they would be at the bottom by date so easy to ignore.

I cannot find a setting to undo this. The grouping setting in settings is only Focused vs Other, which is useful. Google did not help either.

I am sure some people would like this feature so there just needs to be a way to flip/flop it. Help!!

Use the link below for Microsoft’s instructions of how to Change how the emails are sorted section. This is the Filter’s setting. It appears it is set to sort all emails in the Inbox by Subject and not date.

Change the look of your mailbox in Outlook.com and Outlook on the web

Thank you so much. Funny, I had never noticed the Filter. I guess I thought those kinds of setting would always be in Settings, which ironically is where the filter (Focused, Other) is located.

Interesting, too, I never realized the sort by date also groups with a heading line – Yesterday, Months, etc,-  but there are not so many groups as one month covers 30 days of emails so not as much page used.

      Thanks again for your help.

If you empty your Inbox each day so each time you open Outlook all the emails are received on the same day there will be no heading line (or grouping).

If you empty your Inbox each day

Yep, that would work. However, in my case I always seem to have several emails sent maybe weeks ago that I do not want to delete because I am expecting more with regard to those. So the sort by date has always kept them at the bottom of the list until I need to look at them again. But I also can see how somebody else might want to keep all them together under one heading. Thanks to the filter everyone one can have their preference.
