how to use Google Maps navigation software as a standalone app

The latest piece of technology to enter my life is lenovo’s 7-inch Ideapadtablet, and I saw it came with Google Maps.

As I will not have a SIM card in the tablet, how can I make use of the “turn by turn” navigation in Google Maps as a standalone app?

Google maps requires an internet connection. You can probably tether your tablet to your phone and use the internet via that. I use BlueVPN to connect my tablet to my phone.

That does work, but only for the area you have showing. It’s not really an off-line map.
