I click a link in Outlook 365 and it opens in Microsoft Edge even though Google Chrome is the default browser, I have tried to disable or uninstall Edge but to no avail. What am I doing wrong?

AskWoody LoungerFebruary 14, 2024 at 7:23 am #2637500Within Outlook, go to File > Options > Advanced, and look under File and browser preferences to find Open hyperlinks from Outlook in. This defaults to Microsoft Edge, but can be changed to Default Browser. On my work PC, I did this about 8 seconds after I got the update with this “feature”, and it hasn’t changed itself back.

Excellent! This worked 🙂
So freaking annoying that by default, Outlook doesn’t respect the system default.

GuestJuly 15, 2024 at 12:41 pm #2687947I have this same issue; however, when I navigate to File > Options > Advanced the: File and browser preferences option is not present.
I’ve checked over and over and it is ‘missing’.
Can anyone suggest a solution as I do not want Edge to be the browser to open links in emails and it was working fine before ‘NEW’ Outlook. (Firefox is set as my default browser)

AskWoody LoungerJuly 15, 2024 at 8:38 pm #2688062It seems that the new Outlook is supposed to respect your Windows default browser setting. I haven’t personally verified this since I’m not willing to switch.
- Open Windows Settings and go to Apps > Default apps.
- Scroll down to find and select Choose defaults by link type.
- Scroll to find HTTP and HTTPS.
- Set your desired default browser for both of those.

GuestJuly 16, 2024 at 5:26 pm #2688297RG, I do not have this option.
On my Advanced Tab, between AutoArchive and Reminders, I have a setting called: Link Handling, which is described as “Open Supported hyperlinks to Office files in Office Desktop Apps” – I do not currently have this optioned (ticked)
As mentioned above, do not have the File & Browser options

ManagerJuly 17, 2024 at 12:59 am #2688384I’d honestly roll back to old Outlook if you still can.
To switch back to the classic view in Outlook, follow these steps:
-
Open Outlook.
-
Navigate to the Outlook menu.
-
Uncheck the option for the New Outlook.
-
Click the Revert button.
-
Allow the application to revert to the Outlook Classic view.
Toggling out of the new Outlook for Windows preview – Microsoft Support.
If you don’t see a toggle in the new Outlook for Windows, troubleshoot with these steps:
-
Launch classic Outlook for Windows from the Windows Start Menu, not the new Outlook (identified by the “New” tag).
-
Open the Registry Editor by typing “Registry Editor” in the Start Menu search and selecting the app.
-
Go to Computer\HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\16.0\Outlook\Preferences.
-
Find and double-click on “UseNewOutlook” at the bottom of the list.
-
Set the Value Data field to 0.
-
Attempt to launch classic Outlook for Windows from the Windows Start Menu.

I don’t think anyone in this thread is using new Outlook (except me).
But where is the Outlook menu in any Outlook program?
(I don’t think 3. or 4. exist either.)

Revo Uninstaller Pro can uninstall Edge using Forced Uninstall. It is currently on sale (2-year license, regular price $39.95 sale price $16.78). The 2-year license includes any upgrades released during the license period.
Outlook (new) cannot run without Edge; no Edge, no Outlook (new). Copilot also requires Edge; no Edge, no Copilot. Microsoft will quietly reinstall Edge after a time, but it can be uninstalled over and over again. I have a shortcut on my desktop to check for the sneak-reinstall.
I’ve been using Revo Uninstaller for several years, now, and in my experience it is the best uninstaller available, free or paid, which is why I was willing to buy the Pro license.
Always create a fresh drive image before making system changes/Windows updates; you may need to start over!We all have our own reasons for doing the things that we do with our systems; we don't need anyone's approval, and we don't all have to do the same things. We were all once "Average Users".1 user thanked author for this post.
