I am desperately in need of a new PC for my home office and am thinking about
considering a new IBM box maybe with a Flat Screen if I can pry some extra money
out of the dear spouse or else a new CRT Monitor.

Does anyone have any suggestions about IBM PC’s and/or IBM’s track record with these machines?

My other alternative is to build up my own new Box which I have done in the past and
that scenario would undoubtedly be cheaper than a new IBM.

I generally find that its not worth self build these days – (Unless you have a number of good components to rob from your existing system) – I get stuff at trade price – and I still can’t build for less than the big ‘box shifters’.

Shop around for bargins on the net – “Dell” and “Evesham Micros” come out best regularly in surveys, for build/support and after sales service. – Assuming you are in the UK.

      Good luck

We used Big Blue exclusively for desktop PC’s, notebooks, and servers until 18 months ago. IBM’s desktops have served us well with no more than the normal component failure rate I’ve seen with other major manufacturers. I found IBM’s site to be very forthcoming in terms of BIOS and driver updates, knowledge base searches, etc. Working with a support tech over the phone could be, erm, trying from time to time.

That said, I bought my folks a Dell this past Christmas. They’re all the same components in the case, so it’s really just a matter of whose support and price is better. Good luck with the flat screen!!

Thanx so much for all you guys input. Sorry to be so long in getting back to you.
Was out at my Uncle’s Ranch for an extended 4th of July BBQ and party — just
      got back home.

With your input I am now going to go with Big Blue — was kind
of hoping that might be the case as I don’t relish hunting all over the Internet for
the components to build up my own box and them you got the (usually) terrific
problems with configuration. Why not let the IBM Engineers do that and just
get the new box and plug it in. And you all will be happy to know that I
bamboozled my dear wife (at the Ranch party) and she consented to give me
the extra dough for an LCD Flat Screen Monitor. She runs the household and
of course the finances which is great, normally, becuz I do not have to even think
about that stuff. It gets a little tough if I want something extra becuz she has
really consolidated her control now and runs the house like a Marine Drill
Sargent (she is a very strong person) and I love her.

Sorry got off the thread there a little bit.
Thanx again for your help — hope I can do the same for you someday.

      zeus,
Thanx for the input. I have decided to go for a new IBM PC and the Flat Screen
Monitor would just be part of the package. Admittedly it will cost a chunk of extra
cash but I will satisfy all my other requirements first and then look at the cost of
the Flat Screen versus a new CRT Monitor and if the $ don’t look too bad will go
for it. And you are definitely right. Upgrading to a Flat Screen just to be doing it
at the expense of all the other requirements of a system is short sighted and not
      good.

I haven’t actually got into the process of nailing down my system. I have to go to
the IBM website and check out their prices first then I can actually buy one thru
GSA (General Services Administration) at the price that the Army would pay on the
GSA contract with IBM. So that should help somewhat with the $$$. I work for a
large US Army Supply Depot and the Civilian employees are allowed to do this.
A small payback for the incredible red tape that I have to deal with everyday at
work which makes me pull out my hair (it’s almost all gone on top, now). crazy
