      Do you mean mail merge?

If the document is the end result of a mail merge, there is no way to determine the data source.
If the document is a merge document with merge fields, you should be able to find the source in one of the following ways:

      – Activate the Mail Merge task pane and go to Step 3 of 6. It should display the current data source.

      or

      – Activate the Visual Basic Editor (Alt+F11)
      – Activate the Immediate window (Ctrl+G)
      – Type ? ActiveDocument.MailMerge.DataSource.Name
      – Press Enter

If I reopen an existing merge document, and go to Tools…Letters and Mailing…Mail Merge it reopens the Merge wizard at step 3 with the data source displayed.
