• IE 11 keeps asking to update to IE 11

Hi all, yesterday I ran Malwarebytes on my sister in law’s laptop running W7 because some malware called Astronomer or similar had taken over her browsers. I manged to clean everything out and reset her IE 11 and Google Chrome browsers. She has just telephoned to say that a pop up box keeps appearing asking her to upgrade to IE 11. It looks official and asks if she wants to use recommended scurity settings etc. As she already has IE 11, I’m puzzled about why this has appeared. Do you think it’s OK to tell her to accept the upgrade? There is no way of actually getting rid of this, it merely gives you the option of doing it now or later. I’d appreciate your advice.

I’d be wary of that pop up as IE 11 comes as a Windows Update and you aren’t normally prompted to update through a pop-up.

It’s possible that the machine is still infected.

With browser hijackers, there’s two programs I’d run and they are AdwCleaner and Junkware Removal Tool and in extreme cases, ESET Free Online Scanner.

With ADW, click on Scan and if any items appear in the lower pane that your sister in law wants to keep, just uncheck them.

Click on Report when the scan has completed and that will show what it has found and will delete when you click on Cleaning after closing the report.

Another report will be produced after the reboot to show what it has deleted.

The JRT link is lower down the AdwCleaner page and that will produce its report on completion.

For ESET, click on the Advanced button and check all of the boxes then disable the AV program immediately before clicking on Scan.

There’s also a box to auto uninstall on completion.

Thank you. I was a little suspicious since windows were popping up all over the place as I was downloading Malwarebytes onto her machine. (Whatever had taken over her PC had removed MWB and Revouninstaller that I’d installed previously…she gets a lot of infections!) I’ll try again with the recommended cleaners.

Are you sure it’s actually asking her to update/upgrade and not just set up options which always appears on first use?

On first run of Microsoft Internet Explorer 11 for Windows 7, you’ll get this simple choice of whether you want SmartScreen filtering and Do Not Track notifications sent to sites.

Actually, it may be that BruceR, since I reset her IE browser. I’ll go and look and if that’s all it is, I guess it’s safe to accept!

I have just run Adwcleaner and it detected quite a few PUPs including a file containing Astromenda, all of which I deleted. I then installed ESET (which would not open in IE but did in GC) and left it running. When I left her, it had detected 7 threats so I’ve told her to just delete them all. I have advised her that if and when the popup next appears for IE11, to accept the recommended settings as I’m sure it’s just because I reset the browser and it hasn’t finished setting up. (I can’t figure out how to make this popup appear!) Thanks for all your help both of you. Unfortunately, I’m the only “expert” in the family………..at least I know who to ask! 😀

If it was the pop-up you get after resetting IE – which you normally get pretty much straight away when you open IE, you could probably replicate it by resetting IE again and then ask your sister in law if that was the pop-up she saw.

If your sister in law downloads quite a lot of programs, impress upon her to look out for check boxes that will auto include bundled unwanted software unless unchecked before clicking on Next or Install.
