IE 5.5 Rollback Problems (5.50 SP1)

I am running Windows 98SE. I had the opportunity to upgrade from IE 5.50 SP1 to IE 6 (and foolishly accepted). I experienced stability problems. IE and/or Explorer.exe would crash or I would receive BSOD for no apparent reason. Regretting my upgrade decision, I decided to use the rollback feature. I am now back to IE 5.5 BUT it appears OE is now broken. I cannot access email through Outlook (Error Number: 0x80040154) and certain IE features crash (Print Preview, for one). After my rollback, IE and OE are not now listed in the Add/Remove Programs area.
Tech support at Microsoft suggests I reinstall IE (which seems logical) but they suggest IE 5.5 SP2. I would like to avoid the “draconian” features, mentioned by Woody, and instead reinstall SP1.
Has anyone had experience with this sort of problem? Can I simply try to reinstall over what I have installed now? Would SP1 or SP2 make a difference? The IE page is not clear if OE would be part of the install (or if that is a separate install, although the tech support person thought it was included).
Any help, suggestions, comments (yeah, I know now I was silly to have tried the IE 6 and maybe sillier to try the rollback).

The draconian SP2 is for Office and affects Outlook. IE 5.5 SP2 is just fine, on that score. No idea what it might do to OE.

Sorry to see you’ve joined the throng that has found IE6 to be incompatible with a Win9x platform. IE6 is meant for NT systems and far too frequently will not work with Win9x.

I would advise you to do a clean install of Win98 SE (if you can’t bring yourself to get XP or Win2k) – not over the top and in a different folder from your present one. Then, and only then, update IE if you feel it’s necessary.

If it ain’t broke, we haven’t had it in to fix it.

Thanks for the responses. I have solved my problem. The short answer is I ran ie5setup.exe in the Internet Explorer folder. I am not claiming this will work for everyone. To recap: My problem began when I used the rollback feature to uninstall IE6.0 back to IE5.50 SP1 (Win98SE). I then had problems with a. IE5.50 (all printing, print preview was broken), b. Outlook Express 5.50 (broken, couldn’t even run the program), and c. Outlook 2000 (couldn’t send/receive email). Honestly, I thought all was lost and I would either have to upgrade to XP or go back to my last backup or try to install IE 5.50 SP2. Before trying any of these solutions (figuring I didn’t have anything to lose):
1. I made sure I had all my data files backed up.
2. I reviewed the contents of my Internet Explorer and Outlook Express folders and noted the file dates. I ended up deleting (moving) files from the Outlook Express folder with the same date as the IE6.0 install. I had suspected Outlook Express was causing my difficulties (I don’t know why, probably because so many files had the same date as the IE6.0 install).
3. I ran ie5setup.exe and selected the minimal installation and selected ONLY the Outlook Express check box. The installation program gave me a message (something like it thought the OE installation was current and complete and warned me against installing OE again. I told it to re-install OE and it did).
4. I rebooted my PC and now have no problems.
I can print from IE5.50. OE5.50 works fine. I can send /receive email with my Outlook 2000. Best of all, my system is stable, again.
