IE 8 is gobbling up my hard drive

I started running out of disk space. After a little digging around I found 36 gb of space being used in C:USERSAPPDATALOCALMICROSOFTWINDOWSTEMPORARY INTERNET FILES

I found that there are 2 hidden folders LOW and CONTENT.IE5 that can be the problem but there’s not much in them. I have tried to delete my temporary internet files throught the usual methods but that did not help. I also downloaded PurgeIE Pro. It didn’t seem to help either. Maybe I didn’t use it correctly.

Does anybody have any ideas how to dump this stuff?

Replies

Tools > Internet Options > Delete, will delete the files in the cache. Use TreeSize free to see where/if the space is going.

Your suggestion is waht I referred to as “the usual method”. It deletes a little but there is something much bigger hiding underneath.

Have you tried using an app such as CCleaner to delete the temp internet and other temp files??

this is unusual are you the only one using this pc? it could be that someone may have save some files and hid them ;), o would suggest ccleaner 🙂

Give WISE DISC CLEANER a try. Its free and pretty thorough. System restore first, as always.

If you try out PC Pitstop (free computer scan – Optimise?) – with our without setting up a free account, then this is one of the things it detects. (Something about a problem when IE won’t release the space.) In the detailled comments they try to sell you their tool that will fix this, but they also give you a manual method for anyone who feels competant working on a PC. I can’t remember all of the details, but it involved powering up in safe mode, then working in a DOS box to delete the files (and folders?) involved.

Download CCleaner
http://www.piriform.com/ccleaner/download
Run cleaner
Also Click Tools…System Restore
Remove all but two or three of those listed.
If you have Restore enabled this will save you a lot of disk space.

I always set my cache to lowest possible number, which in IE8 is 8 mb ( I prefer Firefox which allows you to set 0mb cache).

Jim, I often find that the c:documents and settingsLocal SettingsTemporary Internet Files (Windows XP & IE) often contains many MB of files that are not easily shown from Windows Explorer such that one is not easy to clean out, even with products such as CCleaner. I little trick I discovered that does remove these temporary files is to use the “Move Folder” option within IE 5, 6, 7 or 8. I like standards in my business practices, and the standard place I move the IE temp files is a new folder I create: c:IECache. Just using the Move Folder function always clears these ‘invisible’ temporary files where other methods do not.

The folder you mentioned above is different than the one I mentioned, but this method may help you.
