IE7 and Explorer crashes (Vista HP)

On a reasonably regular basis my IE7 ‘freezes’ and I have to use the Task Manager to sort it out. Also my Windows Explorer occasionally fails and reboots. Is there a possible association between these two? On one occasion MS fault report stated that Adobe Flash had caused the problem but on checking what I have installed it all appears correct. Checking back on dates using the Reliability Monitor, it seems that I installed an Adobe Reader 8.1.3 Update just prior to when the problems first started and also a lot of HP Health Check stuff (my laptop is HP).
Any clues as to what I can check?

Does IE7 freeze when you start it, or after you’ve been using it for a while?

IE7 freezes at various stages but never at start up … does not seem to be any regular pattern. I am going to try to ‘insert ‘ what I have in Add-Ons just in case either of you spot any ‘clues’. There are no virus’s etc in my pc (according to Kaspersky etc) so I think that it is clean. It functions quite OK apart from these two irritating failures.
Two additional Add-Ons currently are (would not fit in file size to send with this post)

In the past the Google Toolbar has been the culprit several times. Make sure you have the most current version installed.

Had a look … never use it so I have now uninstalled Google Toolbar … which I had hidden and forgot it was installed!
See what happens now!

Most often IE crashes are caused by add-ons. You can start IE without add-ons by using Start | Run | iexplore.exe -extoff. If you do this your browsing experience may be significantly different as Flash, Java, and any other add-ons will not work. You can manage add-ons individually or several at a time in IE byt going to Tools | Manage Add-ons | Enable or Disable add-ons.

For your Windows Explorer problem I suggest you start another thread in the Vista forum. While it is possible it is unlikely they are related and you will probably get better results in the other forum.

Similar experience with IE7 a couple of weeks ago and sometimes now if I use it…no pattern …just takes it on itself to freeze or hang….had the same warning about Adobe Flash so went through all the updating and disabling add ons etc…but in the end, although a fairly loyal Microsoft fan and past Internet Explorer supporter…have decided to dump IE7 and now use Firefox. Sorry Microsoft my patience has been stretched too far this time. Ron maybe you should try Firefox or an alternative browser until MS gets its act together?

I’m not as brave as you so will (for the time being at least) stick with IE. For me it does what I need except the crashes! Maybe dumping Google will solve my problem.

Thanks for this info Leif … didn’t know that such a programme existed in the pc! I have run it (all the loooong time hoping that my pc would come back from a black screen with white typing!) and it corrected a few things apparantly so we will see what develops.

Hi Ron,

I was recently having a problem with IE7 not being able to run JAVA. I was getting frustrated and switched to Firefox which eliminated the problem. However, I didn’t want to give up on IE completely. You may wish to view the thread starting with this post.

The problem I was having in IE was resolved simply by resetting the Security settings in IE to the defaults. Since this is one area where few of us really modify, it might be worth a shot to see if it cures some of your IE ills.

One thing I did not do was to make a note of the settings before resetting them to the defaults. You may wish to do so, just in case it does resolve your issue(s) and you can let us all know what setting(s) may have been the culprit.

Insofar as your issues with Windows Explorer go, I’m afraid I have no suggestions.

G’day Bob,
As I ‘progressed’ to ‘solve’ this IE problem I had reset all security setting defaults. Of course I too forgot to mark what settings I had before resetting! IE7 then said ‘Enable 3rd party browser extensions’ for it to operate correctly. This I did via the Adv tab in Internet Options. Why did I have to set this especially? If it is needed then it should be in the ‘Default’ settings don’t you think!
So … what have I done to date:
-Trashed the Google tool bar add-on to IE7 (which I had hidden and forgot in any case!)
-Deleted and then reinstalled Adobe Flash
-Dumped a programme I use for pics (Nikon View) and installed Irfanview which seems much better for the basic things I do
-Done a complete disc check and repair
Obvious to me now is that I should have done these one-by-one to see if it solved my problem … oops, maybe I will learn to be patient one of these days!

I have to say that IE7 seems to now be more stable so fingers xd something I did in the above solved it.
