      Hi Ronald,

Have you tried running either IE7 or IE8 without any add-ons? If not, try this command in Run: “C:Program FilesInternet Exploreriexplore.exe” -extoff

Do you get the same results if you login as another user?

tried with all add-ons disabled and security set to default. no luck—same with any user!

There’s a Fix IE utility you could try.

Just to clarify, you are saying you are currently running IE7 and it never opens. You have then tried to install IE8 and get the same results? So IE is broken completely on your system whether you run IE7 or IE8? Was IE7 working recently? I’m just fishing for some more details. Thanks!

          Have you tried re-downloading IE8?

Did you disable you A/V software before installing IE8?

Have you tried installing in safe mode?

Did you try the repair utility posted above?

You may have already viewed this page but here is Microsoft’s page for this issue: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/967896
It seems you may have already taken those steps.

I did read on another site a gentleman had the same type issue. He stated he was able to get it running on IE8 after some gyrations. Here’s the link:

Hope these may help a bit.

i have tried all the steps above except the safe mode. i just finished deleting ie7(for the 3rd time) redownloaded and installed ie8–with anti virus and firewall disabled–same results. i deleted ie8 and redownloaded ie7 and installed reset all my favorites enabled all add-ons and it runs great.just about ready to give up on ie8.i am not going to do a complete reinstall of operating system just to run ie8. i can do without if need be. use firefox all the time anyway.
i do appreciate the help from all of you fine people! any new ideas i will try after about a week of not even trying to fool with ie.had all i need for now!

Note: You do not need to do anything with IE7 to install IE8. The IE8 installer will just upgrade from IE7. Then if you need to uninstall IE8, the uninstall process will automatically revert to IE7.

i realize this but if you read the microsoft pages this problem stems from the idea that ie7 is corrupt. if it’s not there it’s kind of hard to be corrupt.that is why i uninstalled ie7. makes no difference either way.

I’m having the same problem exactly. Tried all the options mentioned, IE7 still won’t open for more than a couple of seconds. I’ve uninstalled and reinstalled twice, tried in safe mode, opened in “no addons.” Tried with virus scanner disabled. Can’t access any of the options as the header is blank apart from the address entry slot.
I can’t use IE8 as it stops my HP all in one from working. (IE8 also completely screwed up my computer when I first installed it. Took days to get rid if all the junk!)
      Running XP Pro SP3.
      Thanks for any help
