• IE9 & Adobe Flash Player Upgrade?

With IE 9, I can not display videos on sites that use Adobe Flash Player.
    I keep getting the message:
“You need to upgrade your Adobe Flash Player to watch this video.”

I have downloaded and installed the lastest version several times,
but I am still not able to play videos with IE9

I have no problem with FireFox 5.0.

What do I need to set or reset in IE9?

    Ray A.

Turn off ActiveX Filtering; either for all sites at Tools, Safety (not recommended) or for each site after access by clicking the stop sign symbol at top right.

I disabled Active X Filtering and that did nothing to solve my problem.
I see no “stop sign symbol at top right”
And now I have a problem with my GMAIL: “Gmail requires ActiveX controls to be enabled”
even after re-enabling “Active X Filtering”.
I do not see what “Active X Filtering” has to do with Adobe or Macromedia Flash Player updates?

For right now, how do I get my regular GMAIL service working again?

BTW, I have a 32 bit VISTA system.

Fact: Adobe Flash for Internet Explorer is an ActiveX Control.

Fact: If the Adobe Flash ActiveX Control is blocked by IE9 ActiveX Filtering, many websites will respond that Adobe Flash is not installed or needs to be upgraded.

ActiveX Filtering in Internet Explorer can help you make an informed decision about every ActiveX control you run by giving you the ability to block ActiveX controls for all sites, and then turn them on for only the sites that you trust. This can help improve your protection against risky and unreliable ActiveX controls.
          http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/internet-explorer/products/ie-9/features/activex-filtering

You can turn off ActiveX Filtering to show content on specific websites that you trust. Click the filter button in the Address bar, and then turn off ActiveX Filtering for the website: How to use ActiveX Filtering in Internet Explorer 9

Enabling ActiveX Filtering is not the same as enabling ActiveX controls; it’s the opposite.

Now that’s what I call a clear, concise explaination. And done without rancor or bitterness too. Thank you for your patience, I think you’re wonderful Bruce.

Are you using the 32 bit IE 9 or the 64 Bit IE 9? Most recommend using the 32 Bit since many add ons have not been updated for 64 Bit browsers, including flash. Check Internet Options, About Internet Explorer. The 64 Bit version will say 64 Bit, the 32 Bit version will not show anything.

      • #1291841

Check Internet Options, About Internet Explorer.

About Internet Explorer isn’t under Internet Options.

    • #1291854

‘ABOUT INTERNET EXPLORER’ is under the HELP button..

Click on HELP and you should have the option there.

Sorry, It was late after a long day and I mistyped my thoughts. Banyarola is correct. You can also look using the gear symbol next to the address bar.

Well Ray, being you are so unhappy here with everyone who gives up their time for FREE to help others maybe you should just go and PAY someone to fix your problem and if they fail you can ask for your money back.

I don’t think you are being very nice to that poster. There must be another way to explain what you and others are doing to help him. Being nasty will only make viewers decide not to join this forum. You catch more fiies with butter than you do with vinegar.

      Ray,

Unless someone is right there on your PC t/s a problem, we can only guess about your problem. Most guesses are based on personal experiences, but are guesses none the less. There is no reason to be flaming members here , or in the original thread because their guesses did not fix your problem. As was suggested elsewhere, you are always able to take your PC to someone and pay for repairs. Since this forum offers advice for free, without being able to actually see your problem, and working with limited info, it is not unreasonable to think that some of the info you get won’t fix your particular proble. Many of these failures are tied to combinations of software and hardware in your particular system and can not be duplicated in our systems.

If you are unhappy with the free advice you get here, you can always go elsewhere to get advice.

      Very good explanation Bruce!

Banyarola, Ted, and Bruce. I for one DO appreciate the fact that you give your advice for free here and elsewhere. Folks here have always solved my problems, and I SO appreciate it! This is so much easier and faster than contacting tech support. Thanks again!

And I forgot to mention that the suggestions here regarding the active X filters DID solve my problem! Pandora and one other site kept saying I needed to upgrade my browser and the adobe player. With your suggestions about the active x filter, I was able to affect the repair myself. So once again THANK YOU!! I am indebted to you folks.

Well Fbob, does that we are all invited over for dinner?

Banyrola, if ever we are gathered together, you better believe dinner will be on me.

Dutchess, the original post that I replied to has been deleted so in all fairness you are commenting on my post without seeing what I was relpying to.

You are so right, I commented on something I knew nothing about and I apologize.

I was also going to comment that a moderator edited / deleted inappropriate comments from the original OP. There are times changes are made to posts to conform to Lounge rules. unfortunately when viewing the posts after the fact you don’t see the inappropriate comments.

      Thanks Ted for the clarification..

I don’t have any intention of getting into a back and forth over this on this forum…
This ends it and if anyone has any further comments on what I said they can PM me. I will not respond in the forum..

I use Win 7 64 bit/IE9/DuckDuckGo and don’t usually have Shockwave Flash Object or any other add-ons enabled so I can avoid lots of bandwidth wasting ads. I Updated Adobe Flash to 11.3.300.268 because some site said I needed to. Youtube still wanted me to install it again so I did. But Youtube still said “You need to upgrade your Adobe Flash Player to watch this video”. In IE9, I did Tools/Manage add-ons/Toolbars and Extensions, and enabled Shockwave Flash Object. Now Youtube plays videos. I will have to remember to turn this back off to avoid ads. This needs fixed. Videos & ads should play only when I tell them to. The message that I needed to upgrade Flash was bogus. It should have said the Shockwave Flash add-on was disabled.

If you want to be able to approve Flash use for each individual site, go to Tools/Manage add-ons/Toolbars and Extensions, select Shockwave Flash Object and then click More Information near bottom left. Click “Remove all sites” (instead of “Allow on all sites”) and you will then be asked to approve Flash use for each individual site you visit. They will get added to the list there for future reference, and if you ever need to change your mind about allowing Flash for any particular site, then you can remove that site from the list.

The message that I needed to upgrade Flash was bogus. It should have said the Shockwave Flash add-on was disabled.

Sites don’t know what you have if it’s disabled. They have no way of knowing whether you have Flash at all or an old version. They only know they can’t access what they need.

But it would be slightly better if all those similar warning messages said, “Either Flash is disabled OR you need to install/upgrade”.

Very cool. Thanks, Bruce. I never would have guessed what the “More information” was for. I can’t seem to highlight an approved one to Remove it. Is there a trick to that?
