AskWoody_MVPOctober 10, 2017 at 10:23 am #136338Y’know, even though I’m a dyed-in-the-wool geek who started out as an eager member of the pre-release testing force, I actually think I’m just going to wait until “the artist formerly known as CBB” (or whatever it is that identifies Win 10 has exited the customer beta phase) of the “Fall Creator’s Update” before updating my Win 10 test systems…
Why?
My v1703 “Creator’s Update” system has managed to corrupt itself not one, not two, but THREE times, requiring I start over with a fresh installation.
This time, having started over then having applied an immediate cumulative update to 15063.608, I finally have a system that DISM reports is serviceable, that SFC claims is uncorrupted, and which successfully accesses all the network shares it’s supposed to. What I don’t know YET is whether it will ultimately corrupt itself again. That remains to be seen.
From my perspective, Microsoft has lost the plot regarding maintaining ongoing system integrity.
I started as a pre-release tester, nursing the earliest systems through updates. Then, some time around the 2nd release (what was that, build 10586?) I decided nothing important was happening and I was just spinning my wheels, so I started waiting until Microsoft actually released a new version before testing, with an occasional foray into pre-release version testing. Then a major version later I never tried a pre-release again. Now I’m about to switch to waiting for CBB. I don’t think it’s me who’s changing. Even with all the pre-release installs and tests I never actually had to fully reinstall Windows 10 until v1703.

But that’s dead, isn’t it? Now it’s “Semi-Annual Channel”, if I read things right…
I wish someone could explain why the “scratch-everything and start-all-over-again” approach twice a year with everyone downloading huge GBs chunks of data is an advantage for anyone.
Globally seen the man-hours spent/wasted to maintain that OS update approach must be humongous. Any statistical data on this?
