Could you click on Cortana and see if the “Notebook” icon appears on the left, below the “Home” icon? Several people (including PKCano) are reporting

I have the insider Win10 Pro version of the Anniversary (14393.5) edition.

I have the notebook icon under the home icon.

No Notebook and no Windows Search key at all. Also “Not Configured” in group policy.

Confirmed that Notebook icon is under the Home icon and it actually works.
I have the latest patch running Build 14393.10 which was incrementally upgraded via Fast Track and Slow Track since 1511.

Running Edition: Windows 10 Enterprise Version:1607 OS Build:14393.10 (with latest patch) :
Cortana works;
notebook is present under Cortana and works as designed;
No “Windows Search” is present at all in the registry under Windows.

All working as expected.

I left a reply in your other post, then afterwords saw this new request from you.

The key you want to change is located at

HKEY_CURRENT_USERSOFTWAREMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionSearch

Change BingSearchEnabled value from 0 to 1.

You can check another related key but in my case it was already set correctly:

CanCortanaBeEnabled should be 1

I have no key called “AllowCortana” in that specific registry location.

Logout, login – Cortana is back.

I wonder (1) Who found that??? and (2) If you go the other way, will it disable Cortana?

(I’m on the road, and don’t have access to my usual array of Win10 machines and VMs.)

I tried your idea to reverse the value back to “0” for the BingSearchEnabled key under HKEY_CURRENT_USERSOFTWAREMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionSearch . . .

Sure enough, Cortana goes away on a relog. Local windows search works great in this mode.

This is on Windows 10 Pro build 14393.10.

Wonder if MS will close this loophole or leave it open for those that want?

I did bite the bullet and allowed it to update WIN 10 Pro, Dell XPS8900. Cortana notebook IS showing in Admin (local) account, but have not checked two other limited user accounts yet. However, I had to reinstall drivers for a Brother laser printer and HP Officejet Pro, both connected to this rig. No other problems discovered so far. Did a full backup–just in case–before I allowed it to install.
