I’ve got WinXP-SP3 (Apologies if I’m in the wrong forum!).

I just realised today that I haven’t been receiving any updates for a long time now. When I thought about it, I realised that I hadn’t seen that little yellow icon that appears in your SysTray, along with its notification bubble for ages.

So I checked that Automatic Updates was still set at ‘notify me but don’t download or install them’ which it was. Then I noticed a link at the bottom of the dialogue box ‘offer updates again that I’ve previously hidden’. I clicked this – nothing seemed to happen but the link became ‘greyed out’.

Could someone advise me as I’m wondering if I’ve inadvertently solved my own problem by clicking on this link or if there’s something else I could do to restart my missing updates. I do vaguely remember years ago, Microsoft scanning my PC and advising me what updates I needed, does this still happen?

I believe MS has stopped updating XP because it is to OS’s behind the times……

I did know that M’soft wasn’t supporting XP, but I didn’t realise there were no security updates, I thought it was SP’s etc. Also, I’m sure I used to get updates for .NET, IE etc.

I’m not convinced. Can any others using XP help us out here?

Microsoft keeps releasing updates for XP, but only for XP systems with SP3 installed.

Have you tried to run Windows Update?

Malware may be blocking your system from contacting Microsoft update. What happens if you open Internet Explorer and go to http://www.update.microsoft.com?

Having spent over an hour yesterday updating 3 Win XP machines here with this month’s batch of patches I can assure you Microsoft is still supporting XP. It does not enhance the OS but fixes and security patches continue unabated.

It turns out that somehow, the Automatic Updates service was disabled! I’ve reset it to ‘manual’ (as I used to have it) and, as I type, I’m downloading a whole raft of updates. Seems like another case of human error! Many thanks for the advice antway guys.

As Jock related earlier, MS continues to offer security updates for XP SP3, and will do so until 2014, I believe support ends in April of that year.

An update: you guys might like to know that after installing all these back updates, I couldn’t even start two of my browsers, (F/FOX +Chrome), and the third, (IE), kept shutting down as soon as I opened it. Grrrr!

Anyway, I immediately disabled the service + did a System Restore back to yesterday + all is well again thank goodness. I suppose I’ll have to install the updates one by one now to discover which one caused the problem.
