Considering that checksums validate the integrity of the downloaded Linux distro .ISO,
I for one, would say that this is a VITAL step before attempting to install ANY Linux distro.

I much prefer SHA256 checksums opposed to MD5 but some distro’s only supply MD5’s
After downloading the .iso, check with your chosen checksum utility to ensure that the checksums match before converting to USB device or CD/DVD as installation media.
Warning:
If checksums are not provided by the distributor of the .iso, OR they do not match..
Do Not continue any further!
