    I’m trying to import some complex Word97 tables to Excel; many of the cells in the table contain paragrah breaks (

      No solution here, but be aware also that the same sort of thing happens if your Word table has line breaks and/or tabs within cells.

      Since the only way I know to keep the cells intact is to avoid line breaks, maybe you can replace all “^p” with some special character sequence as placeholders in Word. Then after the import, in Excel replace them back to line breaks with another search/replace.

          There have been several threads on this subject. I think there was one in April (see post #129369) where some string was changed in Excel using replace. In December, I posted a macro that would allow you to take a set of Excel cells and replace some string with a line return (equivalent of using ALT+Enter in Excel).

          I don’t think there is a way to prevent Excel from messing up a Word table that has hard line returns if you paste that directly from Word to Excel. You have to hide those line returns while in Word and replace whatever you use once you get into Excel. It sounds like you’ve come down that path.
