• Inbox on steroids (Mozilla 1.4)

My inbox has maybe 10-12 items in it, none having attachments. Suddenly, though, I find that the size of the inbox has exploded to over 233 Mb. Yikes! It worked fine in the morning, nothing was installed in between. Now it’s so big that I can’t load it to receive new mail. I’d rather not delete it and start over because there were some things in there that I need. I tried compacting with no success. Virus? Known bug? Atomic radiation? Any ideas on a fix would be appreciated. Running 98SE.

      • Backup your existing Inbox and Inbox.msf.
      • Rename Inbox and Inbox.msf to (say) OldMail and OldMail.msf.
      • Start Mozilla.
      • Move all 10-12 items in OldMail out to your new Inbox – which will have been created automatically.
      • Close Mozilla.
      • Delete OldMail and OldMail.msf.
      • Restart Mozilla.
      • This has happened occasionally for me over the years on Inboxes that have been “recycled” from several previous installations. (I have one Inbox for each mail account.) I have not run Mozilla on W98 for several years.[/list]

Worked like a charm. Mozilla still had a tough time reading the new file, but it finally came up. My inbox is down to a more realistic 300Kb and I can get on with my life. Thanks for the quick response. I can always count on someone here having a solution.
