Incorrect Progs launching from desktop icons

Hi All,

I’m wondering whether anyone might have come across the following problem, and if so, how was it resolved?

Running Win10 Home Build 18363.720 on HP Omen laptop.

When launching some applications from desktop icons, a totally different application starts.

eg;
I’ve just installed a program from B&O called BeoConnect.  When launching the program from the desktop icon, iTunes starts
eg;
When starting Karens Replicator, Microsoft Visio installation commenced.

Hadn’t noticed this before the most recent updates were installed under MS-DEFCON3

Any suggestions on remedy would be greatly appreciated.

Right click on errant desktop icon, select -Properties- then the -Shortcut- tab and see what the icon target is.  It should match the application. Post back results.

First thing I checked     the offending icons do have correct pointers to the targeted .exe file

Do you have a Restore point before update? Corrupt updates have caused these problems in the past.

Yes – will do a restore – but it would be good to know which (if any) M$ update might be causing it.   Oh well, c’est la vie.   Thank you.

A complete restoration is possibly overkill in this situation, please try deleting the icon cache files first.

You also can try deleting the affected icon database files as Administrator if they belong to a standard user account.

Before restoring try a desktop refresh (right-click desktop – refresh).

You could try deleting the affected icons and then recreating them.  Just do it for one of them first and see if it works:  make a note of the name and location of the correct .exe file;  delete the icon; navigate in File Explorer (or similar) to the executable file;  right-click it and “create shortcut”;  move the new shortcut to the Desktop (rename it as per the original if you like);  try it and see if it works correctly.

I delayed the restore and tried the other suggestions first.

Deleting the icon cache solved the problem.
