    Hi,

I am making a table with extensive cross-referencing where I need to refer to a Heading AND it’s Page Number.

So when I insert the heading and click back in my document.
The Insert->CrossRef dialogue box greys out & I can move my cursor to the right place for inserting the page number hyperlink

    for the heading.

Problem is when I go back to the Insert->CrossRef dialogue box, it jumps right to the start of the list.
So again I have to scroll right down to the entry I need.

Is there a tweak (maybe a registry tweak) which can force it to stay there & not jump to the top?

    Thanks,

    m.q.

I’m not sure if this is the same problem which I had with x-ref and footnotes, but I contacted Microsoft and apparently there is a bug in x-refing. This is what MS said about my problem:

      Hi Trish,

I have been able to reproduce your problem. At this point, I have contacted another technician to find out if this is a bug or if it is by design. I will get back to you as soon as I have more information.

1.duplicated actions of document and tested. Got same result as the customer and Kirsten (french Team)
2.recreated document to test for myself added footnotes and tried to cross reference with bookmarks and cross refrences. Each time when access them through the footnote went to the top of the page.
      3. tried a work around by just using hyperlinks. tried on my machine and Kirstens machine with WD2002 and still went back to the top of the page. Tried in WD2000 and works fine
      4. found a hot fix.

You may want to contact MS to acquire the hot fix. It is not publicly available through the Microsoft website and requires a password. Use the Microsoft Online Assisted Support https://webresponse.one.microsoft.com/OAS/P…istedIntro.aspx [/url] and explain your problem with the x-refing and they are pretty good at communicating back and forth to resolve… good luck

        Hi,

My problem was it jumped to the start of the list in the dialogue box.

Your issue is that it jumps to the start of the document if I am correct.

Nonetheless, it is interesting reading & knowing how Word’s Wonders come my way, I am likely to encounter what you have & thus be ready to kill it.

        Thanks,

I have also been irritated by this behaviour. I assume that it is because word has to completely rebuild the table each time you set the focus back to the box to ensure that any additional cross-referenceable items that you added to the document are included.

For one project I created my own version of the Insert Cross Reference box that didn’t do this. I had to include a button to allow the user to refresh the list.

Cool, can you send me that system so I can also use it (if it’s not too much trouble)

            Thanks,

This was part of a much larger project, and it only involved cross references to a specific custom caption type.

It would be really difficult to extend it to general cross references because I could never to get it to work with Word’s built-in hidden bookmarks and I had to create my own hidden bookmarks for the purpose. If you wanted to do something similar for all cross references you would need to somehow get the additional hidden bookmarks inserted and manage them. That would be a huge undertaking.

I’ve got macros that solve the problem, but I doubt that I will ever have the time to finish up the few bells and whistles and release them.
Only for VBA, I dropped the WordBasic version over a year ago.
It would take, I estimate, another 2-3 months to finish them up, but unless I can be guaranteed enough paying users, it likely ain’t worth doing.

I suppose the above is the reason a lot of software never gets finished/released.
