I have inserted a Word object into a Word document by going through the menu Insert > Object > Create from File (then I browsed to select the Word document to be inserted) and also selected “Display as Icon.” So far, so good! Then I right clicked on the object and selected Picture Object > Convert and Activate As “Microsoft Word Picture.” The problem I have encountered is that even when I try to change it back to a Microsoft Word document, it does not work, and every document I import in the future is automatically activated as a picture. It simply will not turn off in the Convert window. Could this be a bug? If not, how would I fix this problem?

    Many thanks in advance.

I could reproduce your findings, it seems to be a bug to me. I can’t find any mention of it in the Knowledge Base or the newsgroups, though…

Sometimes I wish I could leave well enough alone. I tested this in Word 2000 & get the same results, but even worse. I had a toolbar in which I had assigned hyperlinks to documents. From then on, whenever I clicked on a hyperlink, the document came in as an inserted picture. This meant that Word switched from normal view to print layout view & showed the Drawing toolbar each time I clicked my hyperlink to open my favorite documents. yikes

The changes are NOT stored in normal.dot, nor in the DATA key in the registry. The only way I was able to correct this problem was to restore a previous version of the registry. So, this behavior is stored in the registry somewhere, but I don’t know where.

Hans, if you’re reading this, you ought to check if the hyperlink behavior has changed on your Word 2002. I am tempted to cause the problem to reoccur with a utility to check the registry (but I want to make sure that I have a backup first).

        Phil,

This is totally bizarre, the hyperlink behavior changed in Word 2002 too! The setting is not stored in the HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftOfficen.0Word key of the registry (n = 8, 9, 10 or 11 depending on Office version); I deleted it completely and hyperlinks still open as a picture. Running Winword.exe /r didn’t help either.

Well, that’ll teach us to experiment. flatcat The only way I was able to fix this is to boot to a DOS prompt & run scanreg /restore & pick the registry from the day before I made the change. Hope this works for you, too!

Unfortunately, I did this on my work PC. I don’t have enough permissions to run scanreg there. And now, I’m not going to experiment with my home PC.
