    A strange thing happens almost every time (but not every single time) I insert an automated cross-reference to a “numbered item” (usually an outline-numbered heading). I uncheck “Insert as hyperlink,” choose paragraph number (full context), and click Insert…

    And the number inserted is almost always zero (0). ?

    Then I click Insert a second time and the correct number is inserted right next to the zero. ??

    In other words, it takes two tries to get the correct cross-reference in. Anyone had this problem and/or know why it occurs?

    Thanks in advance,
    Erik

      I never use this cross-reference feature, so I don’t know the answer to this question: is the inserted cross-reference a field code? Does the zero change to the correct number if you select it and press F9 to update it?

        Yes, it’s a field code. An example of the code (of a working ref) is { REF _Ref67204087 w * MERGEFORMAT }

        F9 has not worked for updating the “0” to the correct number. Of course, now that I’m trying to see the field code behind the 0, I can’t duplicate the problem. (It’s a recurring problem, honest!) When I can duplicate the problem, I’ll post again.

        Thanks,
        Erik

          I think this is related to your selection object before you go into the Cross References dialog.

          If nothing is selected then you get the number, but if you have selected some text then the resulting number = 0

          You should be able to find related threads on this forum with a search. I know it has been discussed here before.

          Managed to duplicate the problem today.

          Behind the “0” appears this field code: { REF _Ref65656392 w }

          As predicted in this thread, I get the “0” if I’ve selected text, and a proper x-ref if I haven’t.
