First – I have Windows 10 for Home (1909 version).  Since the Patch Lady said the version 2004 Update is safe to install I was curious if ONLY the 2004 update can be installed without any other usual suspect updates (since we are still in MS-DEFCON 2 status).

Or do we wait for MS-DEFCON to be given the all clear – install now status?   Then we could backup my PC and install everything all at once.

    Thanks

v2004 cannot be installed from Windows Update at this point. If you use WU, you will get v20H2.
If you intend to upgrade, you should make a full disk image and a separate file backup of your data first.

To install v2004, you will need to use the ISO. If you do not have it, you can download the Windows ISO Download Tool from Heidoc.net, place it on your desktop and run it, Choose the latest (date) ISO for v2004 that matches the bittage (32 or 64 bit) of your PC. Save the ISO to your desktop.

You should do the upgrade OFFLINE. If you are online, you will be upgraded to 20H2 in the process of the installation. Say NO when it asks to go online for updates.
Disconnect from the Internet and your network. Right click on the ISO and choose “Open with File Explorer.” This will mount the ISO as another drive letter. Navigate to that drive and run setup.exe.
You will be given three choices of what to save: your apps and data (will preserve your programs and data), only your data (you will have to reinstall and third-party programs), or save nothing (basically a clean install).

Your version of 2004 will not be up-to-date.
Before you go online, go through the Settings App and be sure your settings are where you want them. Pay particular attention to Windows Update settings so you don’t get bombed with 20H2.
Once online, you can update like you usually do. Since we are at DEFCOM-3 you can update to the OCT patches.

Thanks PKCano – you think MS would have the decency to give you what they show in their optional updates – v2004 not v20H2.  Just another thing MS needs to change.

Download wushowhide and run it. Does it show 2004? I would be surprised if this was the case still for 1909 Home. I would think it would now be 20H2.

no – only shows 20H2.  I will wait for Susan or Woody to put their stamp of approval on 20H2.

          Thanks for your help.

If you want to upgrade to 2004, you will need the ISO now.
Click on my Avatar and then on the “Replies Created” link. I have given instructions multiple times lately on where and how to download the ISO and how to do an in-place install. Read through several of them, and ask any questions you have.

      o

Yes – Susan added a warning to her article saying WU for 2004  was no longer available – only 20H2 using this method.

Because I had been away I left it too late to update 2004 from the Windows Setting, update and security.  I could see that 2004 had disappeared from the Windows update so did not update from that source but from the web which stated I was downloading 2004. What an idiot as due to my ignorance what I thought was 2004,  when I was finished realised I had downloaded 20H2.  I had done a system image backup etc etc before but as everything seemed to be working OK decided to leave as was.  Now one week later still everything OK am I lucky or am I waiting for the ouch to came?

I was told by the PatchManagementGroup  that if I’m at v1909 then  it’s ok to skip H1 and go directly to H2.
