I had to buy a new printer and I bought a Canon MG3220. The installation CD is not recognized; I was able to download drivers from Canon. However, operating instructions are on the CD so Canon sent me a new CD at my request. The new one is not recognized. I tried a blank CD in the drive and it was recognized. I also downloaded a “Fixit” from Microsoft but that did not enable the new CD to be recognized. I have Win 7 Prof.
Any suggestions?

AskWoody LoungerNovember 18, 2013 at 3:54 pm #1423806I have a Canon MG5350 and all the software I am now using was downloaded from Canon’s site. You have everything you need there. Probably the site has the most recent software.
Of course, this doesn’t explain why the CD is not read. If you can read other CDs without issues, I wouldn’t worry too much.

AskWoody LoungerNovember 19, 2013 at 9:25 am #1423840Thanks for the suggestions. Canon sent me a replacement installation CD which isn’t recognized either. I can insert a blank Maxell CD and it is recognized with no problem. I do have one other CD which is not recognized. There must be a solution but I don’t know what it is. If I ever find out I will try to share. I guess it’s case closed for now, unfortunately.

On a friend’s laptop, a particular pressed CD could not be read, but recorded CD-Rs could be both read and written-to. I assumed the pressed CD must be faulty, but it turned out the drive was the cause: it could read blank & written-to CD-Rs but not any pressed CDs. It had not occurred to me that this was likely, so initially I didn’t bother trying to read other pressed CDs. Drive was replaced, and original pressed CD proved to be fine.

AskWoody LoungerNovember 19, 2013 at 10:12 am #1423842You could try the Microsoft’s FixIt center. I know I solved a similar problem quite a while ago, but unfortunately I don’t remember the specific download I used to fix it.

AskWoody LoungerNovember 19, 2013 at 4:35 pm #1423899This is what solved my problem: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/975617
Not sure it can solve yours, and if you decide to try it, be sure to create a restore point.

I read the info which states, unless I misread it, that the hotfix relates to writing *to* a CD, not *reading* it. My problem is strictly related to reading a CD. Thanks for the suggestion.

AskWoody LoungerNovember 20, 2013 at 8:52 am #1423986I used it to fix a reading issue. It couldn’t read CDs previously written in the same PC and that could be read elsewhere.
I just reread admonition from Microsoft about this hotfix: “If you are not sure whether any special compatibility or installation issues are associated with this hotfix, we encourage you to wait for the next service pack release. The service pack will include a fully tested version of this fix.”
I wish to thank those who have suggested solutions. Since I’m able to print I have decided to wait until the service pack has been issued rather than risk problematic results. Again thanks to all.

You’ll be waiting a long time. There will be no more service packs issued for Windows 7. And with the Microsoft’s faster release cadence there may never be another service pack for an operating system.

AskWoody PlusNovember 21, 2013 at 1:45 pm #1424283One thing that I dealt with when assisting someone else with their PC …
Are you sure that your PC does not just have CD Drive, and you are attempting to insert a DVD disc?
I know that DVD drives have been out for a while in PCs, but some people have kept and upgraded older machines.

Jeff-
My drive is a DVD drive and it is selective as to which CDS it reads, unfortunately. A relative copied the printer installation disc on a thumb drive; I have copied that to my hard drive as well as to a CD which my PC recognizes. Now if my PC crashes I can install drivers, etc for my printer. I periodically do a full HD backup.
I hope one day to correct the CD reading problem.
