Installation conundrum

It’s been long enough since I rebuilt Win7 64-bit install that I’ve forgotten something obvious. Trying to put Win7 on brand new Samsung SSD. ASUS motherboard is current in updates. Booting from DVD with SP1 iso, Windows says it can’t install, error 0x80300001. Microsoft forum post http://bit.ly/16F7TAo suggests SATA drivers must be installed. Reboot with ASUS driver CD, hoping to install those drivers. I recall having run that disk before, but only after installing Windows. Sure enough, when disk loads it provides only choice between making a driver floppy disk (!) or loading FreeDOS. So: how to install the SATA drivers in order that I may install Windows? Does the fact the SSD is not yet formatted figure in? I expected to do that as part of the Windows install. Is the answer to first return to the old install (still on the earlier SSD) and format the new SSD under the old install before rebooting with the new, formatted SSD as the only system drive? :confused:

Replies

Three things to try and one to test. First, you probably checked the drive controller in the BIOS but if not, make sure it’s not set to RAID, should be generic AHCI SATA. Second, change the data cable and verify the seating and third, I have read about some similar problems if the drive is not initialized so connect it to another Win 7/8 system if you can and initialize (partition and format also if you like) the drive.
If you still get the error after all that, set the BIOS to compatibility mode (legacy or IDE) and test the install again; if it starts up just fine then that pretty much verifies that it is the SATA driver problem but a big question is how did the old install get on there when it was new? Seems like it’s a settings or drive condition problem if the first one installed normally.

What I forgot was to initialize the new SSD. D’oh!

Your direction to the BIOS is what got me there, when I noticed the drive was showing even though it had not appeared in Windows Explorer. Thank you, F.U.N.
