Installation error with NitroPDF Reader

Running Windows 7- 64 bit. I am trying to install Nitro PDF reader and get the following error message. This sounds like a registry key. If the key is not there, shouldn’t the app create it? I have run the program in admin mode so permission should not be an issue.

Hello…. many times i get similar messages trying to install some software … what i try first is C:>Users>YOUR PC NAME>AppData>Local>Temp….once at “Temp” take ownership of the folder .If you don’t have that available in your “right click context menu” …Right click the “Temp” folder” and select “properties” , Security… then advanced…. Click on the “owner tab” and set yourself as the owner.Click OK …Then click on the name you selected, and tick off the check box to give yourself full control.This procedure will work on a “Key” as well. If your not sure on how this is all done… post back for more details. Regards Fred

Thanks, I tried that and still get the error message. Looking in that folder are a number of log files with somewhat more of a descriptiom:

Error 1402. Could not open key: UNKNOWNComponentsDA42BC89BF25F5BD0AF18C3B9B1A1EE868AB67CA7DA73301B7449A0300000010. System error 5. Verify that you have sufficient access to that key, or contact your support personnel.

Question : Where is that folder ? (path) The message shows that you need to “own ” It. Most times software downloads “stuff ” into the “Temp ” folder that i addressed in previous post, then does the install thing. If you are not the “owner ” it will “choke” Regards Fred

The installer wants to install to C:/Program files (x86)/Nitro PDF Reader which is strange because I have downloaded the 64 bit version as I am running 64 bit. I have tried changing the install path to correct it and I still get the same error. I did a search for that key on my OS drive and in the registry and it could not be found. This is a free program and as such does not have any support forums I can post to.

Hello … I could be that the program is a “generic” type and can run in either 64 32 bit “OS’s” Let it install where it wants and see how that goes. Regards Fred

Thanks for the forum link, I missed it. There is a separate installer for the 32 bit and when I tried that it told me to download the 64 bit version. I have tried the 64 bit installer both ways with the same error. I will try and post to the other forum.

I was given what is apparently the solution for this. It is a registry issue as I suspected. Strange that I could not find the key with a conventional registry search, but could find it by drilling down. I could do the regedit, but am not too enthused about doing so. You would think that software could be written that did not require the registry permissions to be edited. I ran this installer as administrator and that should take care of it in my opinion. Hello.. thanks for the feedback.. Seems I’m also always having these types of problems also ..Mostly mine are trying to remove some “Key” I wish there was a way to set the “ownership” of all “keys and folders to the actual owner of the PC ….Me! So you wouldn’t have to fool with this all the time. Maybe you should try another PDF reader instead …Ex: “Foxit Reader” http://www.filehippo.com/download_foxit/ Regards Fred
