Hi Everyone.

I am setting up a boot machine at home so i can play games and do Access / Web development work in the same environment as i have at work.

As we use NT4 at work, i have loaded NT and SP6, Office 97 with Outlook 2000. That lot i’m happy with.

What confuses me is this: I also want to install Inter Dev and it’s Service Pack, and MMC for SQL Server 7, but should i re-run NT SP again after install of these apps?

I keep reading to re-run the Service Pack after every install, so is this the case? Is that after each app, or after each individual software install? Could someone make this clear for me please?

The best possible way to proceed and ensure a stable environment is to install the apps one at a time, then the service pack – and wait at least a week to see if the machine behaves. If you’d rather do it all at one, you can install multiple apps and save the service pack for afterwards. The main reason for doing so is because ill-behaved programs will overwrite core OS files – so as long as the thing boots and behaves, install away, so long as you reapply the service pack as the very last thing you do.

That mightnot be documented anywhere but in practical application it works.

It’s also a general rule of thumb that if you have to get anything off the original NT disk or Windows NT Options disk, you’ll need to reinstall the Service Pack afterwards. That’s certainly been my experience.
