Hi. Last week, I installed a Windows Update–April 2003 Cumulative Patch for IE6 SP1 (Q813489)–and it wreaked havoc on the Help function of Windows XP. I had to uninstall the update to correct the problem.

What’s up? Are Windows Updates worth installing or are these not worth the risk of causing problems?

      Henry–

Haven’t seen articles on this particular patch as a problem, but a thread here references that it can break Front Page preview. A lot has been written about specific patches that have come out in the last few months on this and the IE section of the lounge, and in past Woody’s newsletters, and other security newsletters like Bugtraq from Security Focus, and the XP newsletters. Microsoft keeps issuing promises to improve patch quality. There’s always the issue of the greater the number of patches, possibly the greater number of problems. Microsoft has two new security sites: NGSCB and the Security Development Center. Whether there will be less patches, and less buggy patches (there have been about 20 this year) remains to be seen.

I saw one Microsoft patch, that was intended to fix previous Microsoft patch, that causing earlier Microsoft patch not working… dizzy Are you still with me?

Bottom line: don’t install any patches unless it is absolutely necessary for your machine! disappointed Wait until next Service Pack will be released – SPs are better tested (usually)… bubbles
