I took the plunge this morning and installed Web Expression. (I think that I really should have waited til this afternoon when I have more time). On installation, it asked if I wanted it to replace existing versions of software. I had thought that it would ask me about Front Page. But no. It asked about One Note – which surprised me. I ended up saying leave the existing version. Then I had to leave the exciting things in life and go to the day job, so I haven’t even fired the program up after installation. Something to look forward to …

But I have had a look on the internet for some mention of the link between Web Expression and One Note because it intrigues me. I keep finding links to MS’s black backgounded page (am I alone in hating dark backgrounds on web pages?) and it appears to need some help to build its knowledge base. I have also had a quick look at the MS Discussion pages but also cannot see any reference.

    Anyone with any ideas?

      Hi Jo

I have a feeling this is a security feature. I have seen other threads in the Lounge where the product (this time Expression) requests an authenticating application to show that you are not using dodgy software, it appears here it is asking for One Note.

This is by no meand an authorative answer or conclusion more a hedumicated guess grin

        Jezza,

While I think that your answer is a good call, I don’t think that it is the right one in this case.

The version of Web Expression I am installing is not an upgrade. It is the full feature product provided through the MS Action Pack.

And the MS Discussion Group says that Web Expression can happliy co-exist with Front Page, so that seems to blow that theory out of the water as well. (sorry for that rather violent image there)

          Hokey dokey, no problems

BTW – I have posted the same question to the MS Discussion forum.

They are not as quick to respond as Loungers so I am still waiting. I’ll post the answer when I get it.

ps If you are going to shorten Johanna, it has to be Joh – just to keep the Dutch side of me happy

I have an answer from the MS Discussion Groups, but I feel a bit like the characters in the Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy when they got the answer of 42.

“I just did an install of my system and noticed that tons of programs that
were in the office family came with OneNote 2007 as part of them. I can’t
remember if this was so with SharePoint Designer, which I just installed as
opposed to Expression Web, but I believe it could be. Expression Web
wouldn’t see FrontPage as a previous version for functionality as it’s a new
product family and has new component registration Ids.”

So I’ll persevere, but there will be no breath holding on this one. It is a simple matter of curiosity and I hate not knowing.

Another reply to my message on the discussion board:

It is a bug in the Installer (also affect some Office 2007 programs)
          – should not be there

          Helpful, eh?
