I am trying to upgrade iTunes to version 7. When I run the install program I get a message that the “InstallScript engine is missing, run ISScript.msi, or contact support personnel”. Add/Remove Programs confirms that I have the latest Windows installer 3.1 (KB893803). After this error message I get another error message that reads, Installation of QuickTime did not complete successfully. iTunes requires QuickTime.” I have QuickTime 7 installed and it seems to run properly. I have posted several times on the Apple Support forums and have not had a single reply.

Patch reliability is unclear. Unless you have an immediate, pressing need to install a specific patch, don't do it. |

AskWoody LoungerJanuary 1, 2007 at 8:51 pm #1045367I found an article on the ISScript.msi file at http://consumer.installshield.com/kb.asp?id=Q108158%5B/url%5D, however I was never able to determine which version of IsScript I should install, so I picked 7x. That did not work so I tried 9x. No joy there either. The following is the log of what I have tried so far:
Log:
I had iTunes 6.0.2.23 installed. However when I started iTunes 6 I got a warning, -

AskWoody LoungerJanuary 1, 2007 at 9:34 pm #1045372I noticed that the instructions from InstallShield have you delete a folder. Presumably it is replaced when you install from their zip file. For reference, I’ve attached a screen shot of the files I have in that folder.
Is it possible that the script needs internet access during the validation process? Try relaxing outbound firewall rules while installing and see whether that helps.

AskWoody LoungerJanuary 2, 2007 at 5:14 am #1045392Jim, I have version 7, not 9. Do you also have a “7” folder to compare? I’m wondering in particular why you don’t have any files with the word “script” in the name.
As you discovered, you can’t paste a screen shot directly into a post, but an image you attach will display at the bottom of your post, which is almost as good.

AskWoody LoungerJanuary 2, 2007 at 11:44 am #1045417I do not have an IScript folder. (See this screen shot) I followed the instructions to delete the driver folder before running the IsScript9.msi file. I had previously deleted the driver file and run the isScrip7x file (named isscript.msi). I am still considering deleting the driver folder again and running this isscript (7x version) again to see what I get. When I run the msi file it recreated the driver folder and sub folders.

AskWoody LoungerJanuary 2, 2007 at 6:36 pm #1045490FYI, from my own experience with the msi installer and reading about it, the different versions exist because different applications require them. Normally we think of an updated version as being desirable, etc., but this is not the case with the msi installer. Yeh, it’s strange to be sure but that’s how it works. So, in your case, the application (iTunes) may require version 9 but some other app may only require version 7, etc. So, I seriously doubt that reverting to an earlier version is going to make any difference and in fact, it may exaccerbate the problem.

AskWoody LoungerJanuary 2, 2007 at 8:25 pm #1045500I agree. I looked at my laptop, on which I successfully installed iTunes 7, and found this tree. I have sent an email to the InstallShield folks explaining my issue. Since I deleted the Driver folder as their paper instructs, I only have the drivers for the single msi file I executed (isscript9). I am wondering if I need to delete the driver folder before execute another msi file.

Cleaning up the iTunes installer files on my computer and then running the Windows Installer Cleanup Utility and removing all the iTunes and Quicktime files seemed to do the trick. Details can be found at http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93976%5B/url%5D
