Instance of Outlook runs after exiting app (Outlook 2003)

I have an instance of Outlook still running after I exit the application. It shows an icon in the right hand task bar tray and in task manager shows outlook.exe still running.

anyone know what causes this? It seems to interfere with my ability to hibernate which is the main reason I’m interested in killing the second instance.

I have checked and I’m sure I did not launch a second instance. I’m suspecting it has something to do with the little messaging that a message is coming in (but simply turning that off did not end the problem).

A common cause is an add-in such as anti-virus or anti-spam software, or a PDA synchronization program. Is anything listed under Tools | Options | Other tab | Advanced Options | Com Add-ins?

Thanks. There are three things there: Delete duplicate emails, Delete duplicate contacts, Norton email anti spam.

they were all checked and based on the clue in your message, I just unchecked the norton entry. The other two are add-in / plug-ins that I bought when I gummed up my files once and they don’t seem to cause any problems (they have to be invoked manually)…. but I did not want / do not like Norton anti spam (I specicially tried not to install it and thought I didn’t but an upgrade or update of some sort must have reinstalled it).

I’m hoping this does the trick… sure looks like it will.
