      Hi Alex5723:

Thanks for the heads up.  My Dell Inspiron 5584 has an 8th Gen i5-8265U CPU (code name Whiskey Lake) and Intel UHD Graphics 620 GPU so I appear to be affected by this change to legacy support. I ran the Intel Driver & Support Assistant today and it looks like the last “regular” update for my graphics driver will be v31.0.101.2111 (rel. 26-Jul-2022) per the attached image. Note that I did not install that v31.0.101.2111 graphics driver today since I normally use the driver recommended by Dell on the support page for my Inspiron 5584.

      Dell Inspiron 5584 * 64-bit Win 10 Pro v21H2 build 19044.1826 * Firefox v103.0.0 * Microsoft Defender v4.18.2205.7-1.1.19400.3 * Malwarebytes Premium v4.5.11.202-1.0.1716 * Intel Driver & Support Assistant v22.4.26.9 * Intel i5-8265U CPU, 8 GB RAM, 256 GB Toshiba NVMe SSD, Intel UHD Graphics 620 * Inspiron 5583/5584 BIOS v1.18.0

I got notice from Intel Driver & Support Assistant today downloaded and installed the driver.
I never rely on PC manufactures drivers downloading only from OEM.

They have done this before. I ran an Intel 3rd gen CPU with Intel HD graphics for years after that was out of mainstream support.

I have no issues with this, as long as critical and security fixes are continued.

Less updates are welcome here (for anything) and if intel deems it necessary to update for security only, I’m happy to be a ‘legacy’ user 🙂

Windows - commercial by definition and now function...

That’s crazy, we’re still deploying some 10th gen systems!

      • #2466406

I currently have a 9th Gen system so this news caught my attention.

But IMO nothing to be too alarmed about. They are moving them to a legacy software support model, not abandoning them.

Nevertheless, you don’t dump 2 years GPUs into legacy.

Intel Kills Optane Memory Business Entirely

Intel’s Q2 2022 earnings report today was uncharacteristically disappointing, but it also hid a new announcement: Intel is ending its Optane business entirely. During the earnings call, Intel CEO Pat Gelsinger clarified the vaguely-worded announcement in the earnings documents, confirming that Intel will wind down its Optane business. The move incurs a $559 million inventory impairment/write-off. Intel issued the following statement to Tom’s Hardware:

“We continue to rationalize our portfolio in support of our IDM 2.0 strategy. This includes evaluating divesting businesses that are either not sufficiently profitable or not core to our strategic objectives. After careful consideration, Intel plans to cease future product development within its Optane business. We are committed to supporting Optane customers through the transition.”— Intel’s spokesperson to Tom’s Hardware…

*“Optane memory”, “Optane persistent memory”, and “Optane SSDs”.

That only makes sense after they sold their storage business. Never was anything but PR there for Optane, I think mainly server machines.

Just because you don't know where you are going doesn't mean any road will get you there.

Many laptops came with Optan build in.
