Internet Explorer Opens Even Though Edge Is Set As Default

I have a peculiar problem on one of my computers. Edge is set as my default web browser, yet when I install Flash for Firefox or for Chrome/Opera–two different install files–Internet Explorer will open after I click the Finish button.

I have (re)set Edge as the default by Settings>Default apps as well as continuing on to Set defaults by app. I have also reset IE’s settings via Internet Options>Advanced>Reset Internet Explorer setting>Reset… without fixing this.

My web searching has not turned up any solutions or suggestions for that matter. Any suggestions?

If you don’t use IE11, turn it off. Go to Programs and Features>Turn Windows Features on or off>Internet Explorer 11 and untick it then click OK. You’ll never see it again.

I could do that except on my other 3 computers, IE is there and yet Windows’ default app settings are overridden and IE opens when Edge should. I would rather fix the one computer instead of applying a work-around. Thanks anyways.

Something else that I have just found is that it seems to be isolated to the installing of Flash for Firefox and Chrome/Opera only. In other instances where the default browser is to open, Edge does, in fact, open.

When I get a chance, I will complete uninstall the two Flashes and then reinstall them and see what happens.

I did have a situation where Chrome would also open when installing Flash. However, I uninstalled and reinstalled Chrome and since then, that issue has not reoccurred.

Try the old Control Panel | Programs | Default Programs | Set your Default Programs. Select “Microsoft Edge” and click “Set this program as default”.

That goes to the CP window to then set the default apps.

Well, since I could not find an answer and/or fix for this issue, I did a clean (re)install. FYI: I had tried an in-place (re)install, but was still having this issue despite doing that. So far, so good.
