Need help/advice with Internet issue where I have to toggle Off/On WiFi each time restarted or after long sleep.

    System:

    Gateway ZX4951
    Win10-64 1607 build (upgraded from Win7 on a new/barely used desktop 5+ years old)
    Intel G6950
    1TB HDD
GMA HD graphics + 21.5″ Multimedia Touch Monitor
P01-B0 Bios (there is a newer BIOS but not sure if needed, BIOS updates can cause additional issues)
    4GB RAM DDR3

What I have tried, to fix issue:
    – Checked internet and forums for issue/advice – nothing found
    – Disabled/enabled/Uninstalled/reinstalled Realtek RTL819SU WiFi adapter
    – Changed WiFi to another SSID and channels
    – As a note, the issue has been present with all W10 builds and not sure if issue present with W7 since upgraded after W7-sp1 update
    – Have checked all components for possible updates and system says latest updates installed

Any serious advice is much appreated

Check Event Viewer and reliability history for any Internet related errors.

Can you go into Device Manager/View/Show hidden devices/Network adapters – right click on the Realtek wireless driver and select Properties.

Under the Driver tab check the date of the driver.

Close that off then right click on the adapter again, select Update Driver Software – Browse your computer – Let me pick then see if there are alternative drivers to use.

Click on an earlier one then on Next where it will install and then check your connectivity continuity.

This can also be caused by a DNS problem.

Go Start – type ncpa.cpl and press enter – right click on the wireless adapter and select Properties.

Uncheck the box for (TCP/IPv6) then click on (TCP/IPv4) – Properties then check the lower radio button for Use the following DNS servers.

In the top row of boxes, type 8.8.8.8 – tab down then type 8.8.4.4 in the lower row.

Check the box to Validate settings upon exit – OK – Close – and the troubleshooter will start which should report no problems.

How have you been checking for which channel to use ?

I use inSSIDer3 for that now and again to check that the channel I’m using doesn’t become over populated by other users. http://www.techspot.com/downloads/5936-inssider.html

Sudo15, sorry for long reply, my notifications are set to weekly and forgot to change to daily.

I believe you may have the issue fixed with the DNS recommendation. I had forgotten that some early diagnosis weeks ago that indicated a DNS issue and I didn’t know how to check/fix it.

I did what you suggested for DNS and so far all is OK but want to wait a day or two to make sure. If your suggestion is the actual fix is there a simple explanation of why I had the problem, an issue with W7->W10 upgrade of could I have done something to cause issue?

As for what I used for channel selection; I use a android App WiFi Analyzer by Keven Yuan that provides WiFi signal strength and best channels to use which in my case 9 for all my different SSIDs. And thanks for your inSSIDer3 recommendation which is more technical which I like.

I will provide final “Resolved” when appropriate or ask more questions.

Thanks for your input and others who have replied.

      StartSettingsNetwork and Internet

Near the bottom of the “Network status” page click “Network reset”.

On several customers’ Win10 systems I have successfully used “Network reset”. In those cases “Network and Sharing Center” was showing the network as “Public” and they could connect to the local network but not the Internet.

Bob3677, I’m having a similar problem with my Window 7, would you mind posting your steps for success? I may be able to “borrow” and adapt your solution steps.

Run a cmd prompt as an administrator and enter netcfg /? where you may see some cmds that could help, but when you fail to connect after coming out of hibernation, use the commands ipconfig /release and ipconfig /renew

Sometimes the previous DHCP IP address isn’t released during hibernation so there will be a conflict when the router reassigns.

You could also add netsh int ip reset resetlog.txt to reset the TCP/IP stack.

Follow that with shutdown /r /t 00 to effect the reboot.

Prior to changing to Google’s DNS servers you will have been using your ISP’s which may not be the best.

I went through a phase where on boot I would constantly get a yellow alert on the WiFi icon and found that changing to Google’s DNS servers resolved it.

While your router will initially connect using the ISP’s servers, the settings in the computer will override those.

You can if you want, change to Google’s in the router, but I just leave those as default in mine.

Anyway, hope that will have also resolved your problem as it did mine.

BTW – Channel 9 is near to what a microwave oven uses and can cause problems when on and you are using the same channel and/or within 10ft of it.

Sudo15 you continue to provide helpful responses to many issues and we all appreciate it.

Your channel 9 comment is interesting which I will keep in mind. Can you provide a link to the frequencies issue for my follow-up reading?

I am showing this post as Resolved as of this posting and thank all for your input/advice.

Try doing a restart from the power control. Do not shut down but instead, click on the restart. It was posted as a solution in an earlier Windows Secret and worked for me and one other computer that I fixed with the same problem.

I can’t remember where I got that info from now, but another device to be careful where you site is a cordless phone base, as that operates around channel 1 and shouldn’t be within 2ft of a router.

      This guy’s microwave operated on channel 11 – http://kenstechtips.com/index.php/effect-of-microwave-ovens-on-wireless-internet

While some of this article relates to the UK and is now a little dated, you can get a broader understanding of broadband.
