iOS 16.3 and Advanced Data Protection

@ Susan Bradley….This Macworld article defines a problem with 16.3 and Advanced Data Protection introduced in 16.2. It was turned off by default.  Users updating to 16.3 are reporting that iCloud Backup and other iCloud services now seem to require Advanced Data Protection to be toggled on which then requires Apple 2FA.  Anyone experienced this and what did you do about it. Susan has 16.3 on Defer status. This may be why.

Replies

Just reread the Apple 2FA website and remembered I did activate 2FA some time ago. It hasn’t turned out to be a problem. So, the question remains with 16.3…if you toggle on Advanced Data Protection, what does it do and how does this differ from 2FA. I hesitate to turn on Advanced Data Protection not knowing what it will do or require. Thanks.

Advanced Data Protection encrypt all your data copied to iCloud (apart from health data, calendar..)

If you lose your key you are locked from your iCloud data and Apple won’t be able to help you as the key is on your device only.

@alex5723  I’m thinking now that Advanced Data Protection, if activated on 16.3, would take the place of 2FA as a means to secure your Apple ID.  This article from CNET explains it.  16.3, I think will require one or the other for iCloud backup to function as described in the Mac World article in my initial post.  I understand your post that Advanced Data Protection has nothing to do with 2FA.  It’s a substitute for 2FA.  What do you know about one or the other being required in 16.3 for certain iCloud functionality and if you have 2FA then activating ADP is optional?

No it is not.

Advanced Data Protection is a total encryption of your data backed-up to iCloud.
Today the data you backup is encrypted by Apple !! and can be decrypted, as Apple has the key, if court order Apple to submit your data.
With Advanced Data Protection this can’t be done.

2FA meant to confirm that you are who you claim to be.

Replies to my initial post drifted from my original question re: iOS 16.3 requiring either/both 2FA and Advanced Data Protection in order to provide certain iCloud functionality as described in the Macworld article attached to my initial post starting this thread.  My quote above summarizes the question.
