Is there a safe way to either change an IP address or disguise it?

You could use something like this, https://www.opendns.com/premium-dns/

Don't take yourself so seriously, no one else does 🙂

If your concern is security, you might try the ShieldsUP! tests at GRC.com.

      What’s wrong with this address?

      https://www.grc.com/shieldsup

Direct to GRC, no fancy shenanigans in the URI.

    • #1498298

      Tracking URI perhaps?

There’s enough of that on the internet already!

Or even worse, hidden affiliate scheme.

      Jumping to conclusions?

Don’t post dodgy looking links then. I’m not going to Google every dodgy link I see.

      No education required for that.

Actually you should do yourself a favor and learn what is “dodgy” before you actually claim you know what you’re talking about.

      You don’t.

      Hmmm.

I know which one I would favour if I were asked to choose.

…do yourself a favor and learn what is “dodgy”…

Probably by “dodgy” Browni was referring to the “x/ne.dll?bh0bkyd2” part of the link. Looks “dodgy” to me too. What does “ne.dll” do?

    • #1498312

So you don’t know what you are talking about lol

    • #1498313

Why do you keep assuming I know nothing about GRC?

You’re just making a fool of yourself.

We prefer, for safety reasons, that URLs are clear and readable, so I have edited the shieldsup URL.

Please, let’s not have 95% of the topic dedicated to issues not related to the topic at hand. I have cleaned up the topic.

You can’t change the IP address your ISP gives you, nor can you hide it. If it were hidden you would never receive replies.
If you want anonymous browsing you need to use something like TOR.

      cheers, Paul

Thanks Paul for that tip. Not being a techie it looks like it may be the answer to avoid being identified by those who have commercial and other purposes in mind. May I ask whether you have used it and, if so, what is your experience?

Come on Paul, you should know better! You can hide your IP address by using a proxy. Sometimes I use this method to watch video that is georestricted. I use a proxy in that country and I get a local IP that allows me to watch the video. You can find plenty of free proxies out there. Google is your friend.

It isn’t really hidden, the proxy records it. TOR is the only way to be anonymous.

            Not necessarily.

Long ago I gave up any notion of keeping my browsing private, so I’ve not used it. You should also be aware that some sites block TOR traffic.

Another option would be to use a VPN where the IP address seen by sites you visit is that of the VPN provider.

Here’s an article on Lifehacker you may find interesting.

    • #1498444

Totally agree. This is what a VPN was made for and if it is that important–and it is when off your own network (though it can be used there as well)–you ought to pay for it.

Startpage search engine “proxy’s” searches to Google, and also offers a proxy link to search results, as one way to hide your IP address. I don’t know if searching is what your question is about, though.

I now wonder whether anyone has ever used one of the suggested means to avoid revealing his IP Address and whether he found it successful insofar as he could determine.

    • #1498601

Just now, without CyberGhostVPN, my IP address is 66.176.72.239 (South Florida / Comcast). After loading CyberGhostVPN (in automatic mode for the USA only), my IP address is 207.244.86.76 (Virginia / Leaseweb).

I use a VPN to encrypt my internet traffic, not necessarily to hide my IP address.

    • #1498628

I do use Startpage exclusively for searches, and when available use their proxy to link to search results. I’m only trying to hide my IP to avoid targeted ads.
