Is there a safe way to either change an IP address or disguise it?

Patch reliability is unclear, but widespread attacks make patching prudent. Go ahead and patch, but watch out for potential problems. |

AskWoody MVPApril 1, 2015 at 5:40 pm #1498290If your concern is security, you might try the ShieldsUP! tests at GRC.com.
What’s wrong with this address?
Direct to GRC, no fancy shenanigans in the URI.

AskWoody MVPApril 2, 2015 at 1:32 am #1498310Actually you should do yourself a favor and learn what is “dodgy” before you actually claim you know what you’re talking about.
You don’t.
Hmmm.

AskWoody LoungerApril 2, 2015 at 11:02 am #1498376You can’t change the IP address your ISP gives you, nor can you hide it. If it were hidden you would never receive replies.
If you want anonymous browsing you need to use something like TOR.cheers, Paul
Thanks Paul for that tip. Not being a techie it looks like it may be the answer to avoid being identified by those who have commercial and other purposes in mind. May I ask whether you have used it and, if so, what is your experience?

Come on Paul, you should know better! You can hide your IP address by using a proxy. Sometimes I use this method to watch video that is georestricted. I use a proxy in that country and I get a local IP that allows me to watch the video. You can find plenty of free proxies out there. Google is your friend.

AskWoody MVPApril 3, 2015 at 7:25 am #1498552It isn’t really hidden, the proxy records it. TOR is the only way to be anonymous.
cheers, Paul
Not necessarily.

AskWoody MVPApril 2, 2015 at 11:20 am #1498385Another option would be to use a VPN where the IP address seen by sites you visit is that of the VPN provider.
Here’s an article on Lifehacker you may find interesting.

AskWoody LoungerApril 2, 2015 at 2:17 pm #1498444Totally agree. This is what a VPN was made for and if it is that important–and it is when off your own network (though it can be used there as well)–you ought to pay for it.

AskWoody MVPApril 2, 2015 at 8:33 pm #1498492Startpage search engine “proxy’s” searches to Google, and also offers a proxy link to search results, as one way to hide your IP address. I don’t know if searching is what your question is about, though.

AskWoody LoungerApril 3, 2015 at 4:03 pm #1498601Just now, without CyberGhostVPN, my IP address is 66.176.72.239 (South Florida / Comcast). After loading CyberGhostVPN (in automatic mode for the USA only), my IP address is 207.244.86.76 (Virginia / Leaseweb).

AskWoody MVPApril 3, 2015 at 4:41 pm #1498628I do use Startpage exclusively for searches, and when available use their proxy to link to search results. I’m only trying to hide my IP to avoid targeted ads.
